I have recently become the very proud owner of a 04 Male Harris Hawk named Buck.
Buck has had a bad start to life he has suffered edemas to both wings that were treated before i got him.
He is a very cheeky chap he knows already how to wrap me around his little talon. We have had no problems at all settling him in, he fed the same night he arrived and has taken to me just as much as i have to him.
We had a bit of a traumatic day on the Wednesday, the day after he arrived. He was sitting with me on the glove and he was pruning himself, he got himself looking just lovely when the tip of his right wing fell off. he lost 5 primary feathers. I knew it could happen but when it does its very daunting. Ken checked out his wing it was a bit swollen but that had gone down the next day and it has healed well.
We have been to the fields just for some exercise flying and he is doing well he comes to the glove as soon as i call him and he is building his strength up slowly.
We have tagged along with Ken and Lucy on there daily session of hunting Buck just sits on my glove happy to watch her do all the work.
Lucy has taken to him too so they will be housed together in the near future. They sit on the lawn on there bows chatting to one another.
I inspected his wing yesterday just to check that things were still ok and h has a new feather sprouting from the Edema scar. All in all things are going very well i couldn't be happier with my new bird hes a little star. :D

I flew a peruvian M HH a few years ago, he was Tiny but more interesting was the fact that when he moulted out, he still looked just like a Juvenile?

They stay spangly for life?

Glad to see Buck is doing ok Carol, i would love to see a pic of the new feather Growth?

(Sadly, i think the same will happen with his other wing too! the damage was quite exstensive in both wings!)

Just for the record Carol, he has done a lot of flying before his problems.

Did I read that right, he can still fly with one wing tip and five primaries missing??

Certainly Carol!

I bred Buck last year and he is the creche sibling of the two boys i fly (Stifler and Finch)
I sold this little feller to a guy in Glasgow as his second bird and made a few checks on his accom ect before agreeing the deal.

Buck left here and settled into his new home.

Alarm Bells started to ring when a mutual friend told me that he was being kept in his travel box 24/7?

I went to see the guy and was told that he had hurt his leg and he didnt want to tether him, so was keeping him in his box??

I helped the guy sort out a loose loft for him and the bird was released into a small pen, ok but mentally ??

Three weeks later, the guy said he was doing ok and had put him back on jess and started flying him again, two days later he turned up at my door with the poor little feller, and both wings had large cyst's on them.

This was the last straw and i gave him his money back (£150) and took the bird back for treatment.

It was very late stage and although we were able to stop the spread of infection, it was obviouse that he was going to lose a wing tip (if not both?)

I offered this bird free to a good home, and Debbie dived to the rescue and contacted Carol, who very kindly took him.

Maybe now he will finally get the home and family he deserves?

This little feller has had a rough time of things so far, so i am delighted he has found a home and some one who cares.

Keep up the good work Carol, and i see no reason why you shouldnt fly him?

well done that gentleman i dont think i know many peeps that would do that.
i presume he was keep out in the freezing conditions? the story tells you two thigs......one despite lots of peeps saying it doesnt happen that often inthis country we still get temps low enough to do this........and two..( and i have seen this before ).....you cn do as many checks as you want sometimes but stil cannot allow for bad husbandry.

Well done Carol have fun and keep us informed :D

Just a short one to let you know how Buck is doing.

Buck has now come into moult and lost his first primary on Tuesday, he is getting fatter by the day he now weighs 1lb 10oz and looks great.
On his tip-less wing he has 4 new feathers 1 more to go until he has a full wing again, i do hope they stay in but only time will tell.
Considering what he has been through he is a happy go lucky bird not a nasty streak in his body, he lets you do anything with him, change his jesses and clean his feet etc, he just stands there and lets me or Ken get on with things.
I can't believe how lucky i am to have such a lovely Harris he's a God send.

Thanks for all your reply's

Carol
Ill post some more photos soon.

I'm just sneaking this post in folks. All of the feathers that Buck lost are all growing back now, and they are good strong feathers. He is coming on leaps and bounds, and we are looking forward to hunting him with my female this coming season.

Many thanks to those who help us.

Buck has come through his first Moult well, Unfortunately he did loose the new feathers that grew on his right wing they all pushed through fine got to about 3 inches long began to droop they would bleed a bit and then fall out 2-3 days later but all his other feathers have grown good and strong and stress mark free.
We have started to train in the last two weeks, i know we are behind most of you but i wanted to make sure he was well and truly over his moult before we began.
He will be going to the farm for the first time this season next week as the majority of his training will be done there. I know he will never hunt like most of your Harris Hawks do, but i am determined to give him a quality of life.
I will post again soon with an update of his training
