Laurant de-Bastyai swore by Vislas, claiming they were the best thing with a bird since frozen quail!!
I've only ever seen one work, fantastic is allI can say, very steady and methodical.
Can't beat a Brittany tho!!

Too right.
I have no experience in working or training them, other than what I've heard from the late Laurant. I would certainly love to give one a go. Much like a GSP x English Setter apparrently!
Let me know how the training goes Finish.

I've always been involved with dogs but mainly lurchers terriers and hounds so i've never trained a pointer b4. I am going to do my best to train this bitch myself - just hope i can do her proud and her me. I have been filling my head with all this dog training stuff - don't think i can take much more. I've had her a month now and she will sit to whistle voice and hand signal. I am throwing tit bits for her and sending her left and right for them with hand signals. she will come to heel on whistle with a few taps on leg for encouragement. she will sit and stay until i get to about 6 foot at the moment. i am pleased with the way she is coming on. time will tell.

At that age you are doing fine, sounds like she's coming on well.
Don't forget that she's still a puppy and needs to do that 'Puppy Thang!!'.
She looks beautiful. I want a puppy now :(

I will be, she is 8 months old now, pointing planted quail. Done the basics, she'll drop no matter what even a bunny feet away so I'm well pleased.

HM,
When you have a steady pointer, you'll be amazed at how close you can get to things. If I didn't have a hawk - I'd still be able to get into high double figures with a stick
I think it held that point for over 5 minutes, and the hare didn't move until the lead was slipped onto the bitch and who was then sent into the flush.

Great I have not experienced anything as good as that yet. If fact my gig with pointers is very little compared to just plain flushing. So you can see why I am looking forward to getting my Brittany working well. I feel I am bashing my head at the minute though!

Tough slip that? What would you do?
I would take the right high side and try to get a flush towards the dogs?
OutFlying
21-05-2005, 04:03 PM
Hm,
I slipped from the position of the camera, don't want to trap the pheasant between yourself and the dogs. You don't know if the pheasant is to the left or right of the dogs or how far in front it is.
From slipping further back the gos will not have to re adjust its flight path if the pheasant flushes in a peculiar direction, by slipping further back the gos will just take the direct line and get up to full speed without having to twist and turn on take off.
Just whistled the dogs into flush, and see where the pheasant goes before letting go of the jesses, making sure it cleared the fence line first.

Have a bitch currently, have seen several work in the UK and states....get a GSP, NO COMPARISON!
Great looking pictures. My mate had a young bitch with his Gos Learn fast well his did. I love them but have two Bouvier des Flanders now so have no room for one. (I should try them in the field :D , better for cattle than rabbits)

Pete,
A friend runs one under merlins and barbarys, points larks and snipe for fun at a good speed - doubt many better at this form of running.
Grant saw it run and it would be a brave man who put his dog up against it.

Those picture are a bit like the old spot the ball comps. Thats something for you HM. A 'spot the slip' competition, the closest description wins a years subscription to 'Heavenly Housewives and Hawks'

Outflying,
Ive heard of good Visla's also, MMD and friends run them in the US and there not bad, have just seen many good GSP's. Not many Visla's.
Probably an advantage to be a priest or librarian  as a bit too sensitive for me.
Pete.
PS: Who's your friend? ....who are you?

Never seen a good one yet, sorry but i have been hawking with loads, and most will not enter cover, water, and if its very cold then forget it, not saying there is some good ones about but i have yet see one, give me a GSP anyday, or a good brit, unless someone has a good un that will change my opinion, i would like to see it this season, but it better be good

I have seen good Vizla`s work and as pete says good GSP`s in fact I had 2 GSP`s who work as good as any pointer I have seen work it is all in the training and the breeding. Good working lines the right training and plenty of game, any working dog needs working and training just like a hawk or falcon there is no such thing as a bad working dog just a bad handler !!!

Wouldn't own one myself, but I know 2 that are run on larks, pipits and snipe - you would look silly if you put your dog up against them. Seen more bad than good though. Very good in water, not in cover - thats why these dogs do well, their run on sheep grazed moorland on the small stuff.

OF i nearly bought a WHV i did like the look of them, but even they seem to lack what a Gos man needs from a working dog, to slow and lethargic for my liking,
never done any bowling green hawking, but if i do i will get a Viz

Personally I woud`nt buy a Vizla there are much beter working/pointing dogs.
Vizlas seem to lack enthusiasum, commitmet and carisma for the job but I have never trained a one, if someone was to give me one Im sure I could get it to point and work to a presentable standard.

It would seem strange that an ancient breed has been bred for so long if it couldn't do the job................. Don't confuse show ring stock for the working examples. I don't own one or want to own one but have seen 2 very good working examples and if you have a dog better then your lucky.

Billy,
Load of ****, mines only 11 months, but she'll go into cover and water if its worth it, and most HPR seem the same, if you want a Spaniel dont get a Vizsla or any other HPR for that matter.
You'd be welcome to see her work her first season if you want,
Steve.
Steve,

Cracker Jim,
Spoke to soon, with the quail though, nevermind she took to wild stuff and I have those pigeons at hand!

Try one, then give your opinion.

I like the WHV and will give one a try, once my old dogs are past it,a bit slow and lethargic but at my age would be great, and maybe i might fly a HH again,
Hi Mick,
You might say slow and lethargic, an owner might say methodical, its all horses for courses I guess.
Speaking of Harris Hawks, I have a great story of a 300 ft stoop at a Pheasant and Rabbit, but I'll save that for the beer you gotta buy me after you see her waste a Pheasant 'Gos style' :)
