Hello

I was thinking, bad as it may seem i know!!,

Allot of people will be getting new birds this year me probably included.

What is the right age to get a Falcon from young and what training process do you have to go through.

Is it the same as a mature bird fist jumping / leash lenth/ strait line creance work.????

Also how do you find out the correct flying weight??, response ??

I was thinking this could be a good thread due to people being new to the ART and people like myself wanting opinions,

What do you think?,

Tim

Hi Tim

I will also be accqurining a new bird this year!
I really cant wait!

Dont take this post the wrong way ;-) you probably have more experience than me!

But as for the correct age I am going to leave this decission to the breeder! Most people will want the bird yesterday, i would!
But the breeder should know when the best time to seperate them and free the new owner up from his hard earned cash!

Now i suppose this could mean if they are not good breeders this will be too soon, but this takes brings me back to trusting a well respected breeder!

Also as for the correct weight, I would hope that any new falconer/austringer would know how to judge weight before they get one!

This might mean attending a course run by a reputable center or by finding a falconer / austringer close to you and picking his brains when ever you get the chance.

Some of this info can be gained from a good book! I would recommend three:

Emma ford Falconry art and practice

Jemima. Parry-Jones Training birds of prey (one on ebay at moment £4.99 (7131084917))

Dr Nick Fox Understanding birds of prey

These three books are really superb, read them a couple of times!

dont forget varmint's book for beginners  but i would find it strange to get a bird without knowing all this first. It is not a pop at you timberdog but it comes as a surprise that you didnt know this already.
