Hello everybody, I have lots of doubts about my saker behaviour,
and I really hope someone can help me out with this, and maybe we
can se what is wrong with it.
Well, the bird is a male saker falcon, born in 2003, parental reared,
dosen't have any bad habbits exept for one wich I will describe.
I have received the bird from a person who sayed that dosen't have time for
it an that the bird was not trainen, only a little: flying to the lure on the
crence.
I have trained the bird, and after a time when I was sure that I will
not lose it, i've start to stop it to the lure flying free. Everything was perfect.
The bird is a beast on the lure, flying very well and hitting the lure violently.
Everytime I gave it lots of revard on the lure, half pigeon, so the bird
be interested on the lure.
Here starts the problems:
One day, just like always, we got in the field again, and I've tryed to stop it to the
lure, just like always. After giving 2 or 3 turns, the bird flew away, high in the sky,
ignoring my calings. It was in the same flying weight like always (760 grams). After circling
around high, flew on top of a tree. After spanding some 5 minutes on the tree,
compleatly ignoring my callings, flew away and I lost his sight. After some another
5 minutes, caling it to the lure, the bird appears high in the sky, and lans on a bungee-jumping
tower, around 80 - 90 meters from the ground. The bungee-jumping tower is situated right in the midle
of my flying field, where we fly every day. Every intent to bring it down failed.
The bird just sits there, compleatly ignoring my callings. I call it with the fist, lure and
a bagged pigeon, but the bird din not shown any interest. This was very strange, because
the falcon responds very well, and that day was compleatly ignoring my calls and just sits there
looking around. I've returned some hours later (almost night) and call it to the lure.
The falcon as still there on the tower, and flew to the lure on first calling.
The next few days I call it to the lure on te ground (WITH THE CRENCE ON), giving grate revards on the lure,
and in each afternoon we made high jumps, so the bird was making firs only 20 - 30 jumps,
and then we get to 130 - 140 jumps in a cople of days.
So, that wat it is: in the morning, 1 flyight to the lure with a grate reward, and in the afternoon, high jumps one
session, until the bird get tired or lose interest. I repeat this proces for at least 2 or 3 weeks,
never flown the bird free, only with the crence.
Then, I've start to release pigeons from my hand (the pigeons also on a small crence), and the bird start chasing
the pigeons (also the falcon was on the crence). I've repeated this proces some 2 weeks, giving one day a pigeon, the next
day the lure, and again pigeon, lure, pigeon, lure.... and every afternoon, high jumps session.
After a time, the falcon get very interested on bagged pigeons, and chased every one, cathing them agresivly.
It lookes like it's ready to fly free again, at least from the fist to bagged pigeons.
I give up with the stops to the lure, thinking that this could be the reason of his high flyghts.
One day, we got in the same field like always, and I've released a pigeon from my hand (withouth a few feeders,
so that the falcon could catch it), and also I've released the falcon from my fist, compleatly
free the falcon and the pigeon. After chasing the pigeon around 50 meters, the pigeon entered in the cover, a small stand of small
trees, and the falcon flew above the trees and let itself fall right in the middle of the stand. The image was incredible, such a
large falcon falling betwen trees. I run there, thinking that the falcon caught the pigeon. When I get there, I found the falcon
standing on the ground looking around where could be the pigeon. Wen I approached, the falcon jumped on my fist always looking around.
We looke around for the pigeon in the small cover, and finaly I saw it and flush it again. The falcon chased him in hot pursuit, and finaly caught
it. I let him eat almost the entire pigeon.
The next few days, after the falcon is loosing some more weight, i made only high jumps.
Again the falcon was ready to fly after another pigeon. We get in the field. There was a little wind out there,
and I let another pigeon and the falcon. The falcon chased the pigeon and the pigeon run for cover in small grass. The falcon stop
at the pigeon, then flew high (around some 5 meters from the ground, because the pigeon was on the ground), and then stop
again, and again, but not toching the pigeon. Then happened something scary: the falcon flew very fast, highd up in circles,
and soon I've lost his sight. He flew just like you release a freshly traped passanger, loosing it on the sky, watching how it become
little and dissapears. I maintained the possition, callin it to the lure, but the falcon was very far away, above the city, and I've lost
his sight. After spanding some time calling it to the lure, I get home, thinking that it's beter to come again after some hours.
I've came again that day, but the falcon was no there. Again i get home and tryied on the afternoon. The falcon was not there.
The second day in the morning, on first hour, I was on the field with the lure and a bagged pigeon, looking for it. Still, not there.
After some hours again in the fiel, but still the bird not there.
In the afternoon of the second day, I got in the field withouth any hope to find it. After spanding some 1 hour calling it to the lure, and flapping a pigeon,
i decide to go home, but I saw a kestrel in the top of a tree, and i was thinking that this is my falcon (the kestrel was
far on a tree, and could not see the diference). When get there with the lure, the kestrel flew away, chased by a pack of magpies.
I decide to go away, it was inutil. And I saw another kestrel flying above a forest, very high. This kestrel land on the bungee jumping tower.
I run there to see if this could be my bird. When get uner the tower, the kestrel was looking at the lure, but not shown any interest.
Then he moved up there and I could hear the beels. It was my saker!!! And now, it seems that the kestrel I saw early, was there, ataking my saker.
The saker flew up, chasing hardly the kestrel, and almost tooke it, but in the last moment give up the chase, and again lands on the tower.
The kestrel dissapear. I trow the lure on the ground, and my falcon flew and tooke it in the air. After transporting the lure some 140 - 150 meters, he land on the ground.
I approache, and when close, the falcon jumped on my fist. I was happy to have it back.
When at home, the bird was weighting 720 grams. His flying weight was 760 grams, and when I received the bird was weighting 880 grams (fat weight i think).
NOw I don't fly him free, until i figurit out, what could be the problem and why the bird doesnt respond well. I have heard that
the saker on flying weight is a beast, making anything for a piece of meat, yet, this bird is letting me there, flying away.
I just don't get it.
IMPORTANT QUESTION:
- maybe I need to cut his weight more???
I have received the bird on 880 grams, I flew him on 760 grams (in this weight I also lost it 2 times), and now,
after spanding some time outside, I've get it back on 720 grams.
From 880 to 760 (flying weight) are 120 grams difference from the falcon's weight!
From 880 to 720, are 160 grams difference.
Can someone help me out, I just don't get it.
