Shaun,
I'm going to price them up this week and maybe make them out of larger diameter tube if possible.

Most likely mild steel powder coated as stainless prices have gone through the roof.

Different sizes will be available, but all of them will be "bow shaped" and not the usual rubbish peddled by many.

Jim.

Darren,
I personnally dislike astroturf as a covering for a bow perch as the ring doesn't move freely over it.

The bowperch can be covered, it will be rope and then rubber over that.

The bowperch will be available uncovered or rubber finished top.

It's rubber tape over a rope covering, I've used in the past a bikes innertube - they work well.

Due to being solid bar and having a wide frame on the base they are very heavy when compared to most commercially available bow perches, postage will be at cost but may be quite a high cost.

Yours Jim. Try making the top with stainless steel pipe, takes less bending ,is lighter and cheaper, ive made many will look for some pics, made Neil hunter one completely stainless last year for his eagles, also putting a mounting on your bottom rail, and using black alkathene tubing, is both rigid lighter and cheaper ,also more bird friendly,i made the first for a guy who lives near me up in the lakes, the temp at night in winter used to give his harris feet probs?, i found the rigid alkathene didnt draw heat from the toes as much, even though they were padded....colin...they were around £35 each and have been in use for over 15 years with not a hitch...

Thanks Colin,
Used stainless tube before, tried solid bar but expensive. Next attempt will be plastic water pipe (can't spell the name  ) with metal base and 2 spigots forming the start of the bow.

Thanks for the advice,

Hello Colin,
Did the pipe fit into the socket or over it ?

Jim.inside was more secure, bore out the stainless pipe to clearance on the alkathene, and drill and weld a stainless pin through, alkathene has amazing tensile strength, and immune to weather, just drill a drain hole into the socket centre thru the base to drain any water that may get there, and taper the stainless pipe on the lathe so it leaves no ledge as it meets the tube?, only takes minutes. If you fit over the tube, you then need to have a reasonable diameter rivot or bolt on the outside of the tube which although can be somewhat softened, still leaves a possible snag point for both hawk or furniture..colin

Thanks Tim,
I'm trying to get the perch diameter to 40mm without padding, and then minimum padding added to enable the tethering ring to pass freely over the bow.

Colin,
Would it not be possible to have bar running inside and a tight fit for the first 5" and use an adhesive ? or countersink a fastening ?

Jim.Thats one real benefit with alkathene, very little padding is needed as the pipe is larger in dia than would be suitable with metal bar..

Jim.I have done this but then in engineering terms we are relying on whats called a friction grip?, as against a secured grip, i tried alsorts mate, and must of made and sold hundereds of blocks and bows under (taylor made) but what i ended up with was as above and they worked best, you will always get some daft sod trying to pull his bow out of the frozen ground by yanking at one side, then in colder climes, even adledite changes molecular structure and can become brittle and prone to break, years of expansion and contraction on two completely diff marerials in essence (plastic and steel) will break any adhesive, just drill and pin, not much more effort for a lifetime cert...will post some of my equipment tom, i also used to make very large ring perches, from 2" stainless pipe polished and mouted on a large 3/4" dia spike that stoodnearly one metre high...if i do say myself i think they were the best hawk or eagle perches ive ever seen or used. but they were labour intensive....most went to large eagles or gosses...colin

Mac i will if poss put up a pic of the stainless ring perches i use to make, they are very large, out of 2" stainless sched 40 pipe, about2 feet diameter nearly 3 feet tall, birds would not bait from them as they were tetherd high so baiting would throw the hawks face to the floor?..i made about 20, mostly for eagles, but they are the best perch ive ever used,or will ever..see what you think tom mate
