Hi Guys,

Could anyone give me a definitive explanation of what Gyr x Saker Hybrids make what. For example, pure Gyr into 50 50 Gyr x Saker 3/4 Gyr x Saker produced.

I'm specifically interested in the mixes of 5/8ths 3/8ths and 1/4.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers VS

Pure Gyr X Saker= 50/50 Gyr/saker (50% gyr 50% Saker)
50/50 X pure Gyr =3/4 Gyr/saker (75% gyr 25% Saker)
3/4 Gyr/Saker X pure Gyr = 7/8 Gyr/Saker (7 parts Gyr one part Saker)
3/4 Gyr saker X 50/50 Gyr/Saker= 5/8 Gyr/Saker (5 Parts Gyr 3 parts Saker)

Pure Saker X 3/4 Gyr/Saker= 3/8 (3 parts Gyr 5 parts saker)
50/50 Gyr/Saker X pure Saker= 3/4 Saker/Gyr (25% Gyr 75% saker 1/4 Gyr)
Pure Gyr X 3/4 Saker Gyr= 5/8 Gyr/Saker (5 Parts Gyr 3 parts Saker) Note that the 3/4 is a 3/4 saker 1/4 gyr not the other way around

when dos a hybred stop being a hybred? i have heard that once they are so "diluted" D E F R A will register them as a "pure bred" what percentage is this? and if its true i think its quite worrying personally.

Pure Gyr X Saker= 50/50 Gyr/saker (50% gyr 50% Saker)
50/50 X pure Gyr =3/4 Gyr/saker (75% gyr 25% Saker)
3/4 Gyr/Saker X pure Gyr = 7/8 Gyr/Saker (7 parts Gyr one part Saker)
3/4 Gyr saker X 50/50 Gyr/Saker= 5/8 Gyr/Saker (5 Parts Gyr 3 parts Saker)

Pure Saker X 3/4 Gyr/Saker= 3/8 (3 parts Gyr 5 parts saker)
50/50 Gyr/Saker X pure Saker= 3/4 Saker/Gyr (25% Gyr 75% saker 1/4 Gyr)
Pure Gyr X 3/4 Saker Gyr= 5/8 Gyr/Saker (5 Parts Gyr 3 parts Saker)

Not wishing to be rude, but I dont get that, I am quite good at working out what fraction of what makes what, and you have just confused the **** out of me.

Surely pure saker x 50/50 gyr/saker is a 1/4 gyr saker.
exactly the same as 50/50 gyr saker into pure saker is a 1/4 gyr/saker.

They have the same make up, albeit from different directions.

Ie pure sakerx50/50 gyr/saker

is saker/sakerx Gyr/saker, so 3/4 saker 1/4 gyr

and 50/50 gyr/saker into pure saker is

gyr/saker into saker/saker, ie 1/4 gyr 3/4 saker.

I dont think I am wrong.

Here is how I work it out.

I total up the amount of each parent there is, so say I had a natural pair that the male was 50/50 gyrxsaker and the female was 3/4 gyrxsaker, so I straight away know that I am going to have an 1/8th in there somwhere.

So writing down the makup of each parent bird as a fraction of 8.

would be writen as follows.

male= gyr/gyr/saker/saker.
female= gyr/gyr/gyr/saker, so the ofsping would be 5/8 gyr/sakers.

Deos that make sense or am I being daft!

Cross a 5/8 gyr/saker with a 3/8 gyr/saker and you will get 50/50 gyr/saker

Cross a 5/8 with a 1/4 and you get a bird with 9 parts saker and 7 parts gyr a 7/16 gyr/saker lol almost a 50/50 but not quite...

An easy way to look at this is that each parent donates half of its genes to its offspring.
I dont know how your Defra works, but genetically (if I remember correctly) if you add a new gene to the pile and then breed all pure genes from that point on. It takes 7 generations to come back to being pure(sort of).

So if you breed a gyr/saker to a pure gyr. then breed the young back to pure gyr each time after the 7th generation they are supposed to be back to pure. (but genetics class was a long, long time ago)!

If they had not brought in decimilisation you would all be able to work it out
