Hi Folks;

Just figured I'd start a thread to discuss flying fishing and help out beginners. Seems like a good deal of anglers on here.

Personally, I am a professional guide, outfitter, bush pilot, author, biologist of sorts, and all around salmon bum. I live in Newfoundland Canada and have experience throughout eastern Canada from the arctic to the border.

Anyhow,....lets swap lies, compare techniques and help each out out.

Cheers;
Bill (a small one below...lol)

We don't actually weigh them....we measure the length and girth with a 60 inch soft tape then use the formula length X girth squared divided by 800.
As for the biggest....I truly don't want to say as people will say I'm a liar. Lets just say that the N.A. record is supposed to be 72 pounds but rumour has it that one of our guides (and three witnesses) might argue that point. If ya wanna have 5,000 guys trying to fish a river....just start bragging about your 40 and 50 pounders and plastering photos everywhere.

Those that fish in North America for large salmon know that a river with a very significant run of 3SW alternate spawning salmon will produce some monster salmon. 68% of all North American Atlantic salmon rivers are here in NL. We fish the best (by far) 3SW salmon producing river among this 68%. So, my guess is that it doesn't get much better for trophy salmon on this side of the Pond. The Alta of Newfoundland and Labrador.....but with dry flies!

Are the browns sea run?...I'm guessing not as it seems most UKers call these "sea trout". Can you fly fish and game hawk at the same time in Scotland via motorized canoe/boat or such?...guessing not.

Q. Does anyone in the UK use bombers on a dead float for salmon?
Q. Does anyone combine game hawking and salmon fishing in the same day or "field session" in the UK?

Sorry for the delay in replying.
No the Browns are either river or land locked,(Loch's).
It is perfectly possible to combine a fishing trip with a Hawking one, though most guys I know Hawk first, then fish afterward.

Thanks for that....I guess it would get rather complicated trying to have the bird(s) sitting around in a boat waiting to come upon ducks. Best to do one or the other I guess. Would love to chat with salmon fishing falconers.
