Does anyone breed Kestrels???
I have a 4 year old female she laid 4 eggs last year.
I also have a male from last year.
Do you think he will be up for it with the female this year,at such a young age???????????????? :?

We've put 2 last-years birds together. So far, no activity, but they accept each other in the aviary. No fighting or anything like that. I gues it's upto the indevidual bird, I supose some Kestrels in the wild mate young?

Kestrels like Spars, Goshawks, sakers, Merlins
can breed in the first year.
Its common for females of the species to maybe take a little longer as there part in breeding is a little more indepth (ie egg laying)
But i would put the pair together, just be aware that accidents do happen & not every one gets on.
Even birds together for years can have a fall out & result in a death or injury
Its part of the game, but its your part to keep the odds low by watching for any reasons for a split

Lee
Its years since we bred kessys, but peregrines are 31 days to pip, 2 days to hatch , Merlin's 29 days to pip, larger the egg longer incubation period,
i would say 30 days for kestrels,
good luck, are they under birds
Finnish
29-05-2005, 10:26 AM
Thanks Mick yes they are under the birds. We did not think they were fertile at first because the male was only one last week but Chris has been arond twice and check the eggs and he could not belive they were firtile with the male being this young.

I just looked on the camera and it was in complete darkness. It was facing towards the roof, so out of piece of mind i had to go in and have a look. The male took off and landed as far away as possible, the female stood and underneath her were two balls of white fluff. And yes you have guessed there are two little kes's under her and i am over the moon. Considering the male was only one year old last month, i am happy with two! Just thought i would let you all know.
Cheers Finnish

what i do is put some sort of ladder so young can run up back to nest or a ledge.a peace of 3X2 wood with astro turf along it is ideal. but make sure

Hey Lee,
If I was your friend and if he was a true mate, he would not take one for free. He would also understand that mistakes happen and life is more important to have good lyoal buddies than to make a big deal about incidents that can not be helped.
