View Full Version : FOR BEGGINNERS:A LIFESAVER
Showed this one to Weasel in the states, getting his bird off a owl......When the bird is "locked" on with talons(another bird, unwanted quarry, arms!etc)place your hand over the head and hold lightly(covering eyes),the bird WILL release,..push bird over backwards and watch for flailing legs.I have used this many times with birds and it can save the situation,..dont rush but be confident ,it does work :!: (ask Weasel  )
Another one wich i think is a must is to make a big hood out of the softest,leather/vinyl you can find,in the event of an accident in the field, pull out the hood, its so soft u can crush it up and takes up no room,Has a wonderful calming effect on an injured bird, and can belive it or not, slow blood flow considerably
(remember, the hood aint gotta be pretty) Nor has the bird got to be made to the hood allready,..its an emergancy measure.
Can i just stress this aint "to have ago" at anybody because of recent events....just meant to help.Cheers,GAZ.

Gaz. I just tried this out this morning on my MHH. He was totally locked on to a feather lure (long story why) and...it didn't work. He ended up on his back with me covering his eyes and his feet in the air still locked on. Reverted to holding the swivel and throwing a piece of chick out of reach for which he eventually gave it up.
Quite prepared to admit it was my error - I am a rookie after all.
Why would you be trying to grab the head to get the bird off the lure? Keep doing this and you will get a bird that mantels excesivly every time you make in, maybe even a bird that comes to foot you. This type of thing should only be used in an emergancys, like a bird on another bird or a bird on a human. Learn to step your bird of the lure, or better yet for the bird to leave the lure to come to the fist.

Well - it was an emergency in my book. Like I said, I'm a beginner and it was a situation that had developed so I tried to use the technique described here as it seemed appropriate at the time, notwithstanding the fact that the time NOT to try something new would be when my bird had a hold of a child or something else serious. Practice gentlemen - we all need to practice new things.
Anyway, it didn't work. Now I can either take your smacks on the wrist for doing the wrong thing today with my bird or ask Gaz his considered opinion as to what I did wrong with the technique.
The post was that this was a godsend for beginners. So I'm a beginner. Teach me or shoot me down. Up to you.

Nobodys gonna shoot you down dude, explain why it was an emergancy to get your bird off of a lure?,cos to use this to get your bird off of quarry(afterall a lure is "quarry",young bird is it?)can nause up your bird, and ill try to explain it better, cos ive not known it to fail, even with Reds and at one time a female Goldie taking a furrow out of a guys forearm

Welll...it was a combo of panic on my part and the need for a swift getaway from a pigeon loft. Nuff said?
Yes, he's a young bird - eyass. I had just read your post this morning and thought "That's it - let's get him off quick and get out of here!"
So...
dont rush but be confident ,
cover the whole head and eyes and squeeze firm but lightly....and keep away from racers :!:

"the need for a swift getaway from a pigeon loft" care to elaborate a little bit,
How do you get your birds off of game? My harris would try to get off the dummy, she would get one foot on the glove but the other would stick. Sometimes it was, but i had to pull the other off with my other hand. Maybe a bit risky, but i could tell she wouldn't grab me.

i know of a different method that me n pchay had to use at a falconry display the jackal buzzard grabbed the barn owl so all we did is placed are fingers around the jackal buzz head and just gently pulled upwards and she immediatly let go n tagged the glove and settled down barn owl saved8-)
