hi guys
your thoughts please... this is my male harris,s toe as you can see he has a large lump under the skin,, i have had him at two vet who both gave the same answer , that there is a foreign, object just under the skin ( probably a thorn tip etc) that his body has laid calcium around, the lump isnt attached to anything in his toe and can be moved around, it doesnt seem to be causing him any pain and isnt hindering him in any way ans because of this both vet seem to think that its best left alone.... what do you guys think???

i certainly wouldnt go against a vet's opinion but if it was a foreign body there should be inflamation should there not?? a person with a barn owl not too far from me had the same problem and it was a broken toe. Hope you can get piccies sorted soon, i hope your bird does too. keep up updated mate

hi hawknorth ,,, no the vet says it will just stay the same as it is just now,, the lump is as hard as stone,,, bubo... because the thorn ? is encased in calcium the birds body doesnt recognise it as a foreign object(according to the vet ) and it shoulndnt become infected
pardon my ignorance but how does something become encased in calcium? this is quite interesting.

Not necessarily a foreign body, bird pus is caseous not liquid like mammalian pus so can appear quite solid. Also certain bacteria wall themselves off so the abscess has a thick shell. If this is just lanced it is likely to return as the whole of the shell needs removing as well as the contents. I had a lump on the toe of my Harris which appeared months after a squirrel bite due to a slow growing bacterial infection that had encased itself in a shell. Once removed it has never re-grown. Without seeing the lump it is hard to give advice.

Hi Brian, in this day and age with modern anisthetics like Isofluren, your bird can be safely knocked out, operated and recovered from anisthetic in less than 15 mins, completly safley.
Prob is most surgery's dont have isofluren machine?
Alister Laurie in Falkirk is a good vet, as in Ian Patterson at Stirling verterinary Hospital, either would be worth an appointment for a second opinion?
Me and old sprout have done quite a few of these proceedures with no probs, but you just have to ask your self: "Is it in a position that may bother the bird in future?"
Monitor it's size for now, the anti bodies will continue to build and it will increase in size, but for what is's worth, in certain positions on the feet and toes it really is a simple proceedure to pop it out.
Good luck mate!

  i am really not having fun with this pc  anyway, pretty much as you have said varmint, the lump is on his right foot on his left toe where it doesnt touch the ground when perching, and as its not causeing any problems the vet have said just to leave alone :)

hi, we've found these sort of lumps crop up now and then, try appling aloe vera or prep h to keep skin moistened and they usually come to the surface over time and will either get knocked of or u can help it alittle.several people i know have had the same and evenually you won't know its even been there
cheers sprout, so if i understand it properly it is the bacteria creating the shell and not the birds defense system?
Outonawing, i would be a bit worried if a lump would just be knocked off especially on the foot. wouldnt it be an opportunity for other grubby stuff to get in?
