I'm about to start building a mews/breeding aviary. Just discovered the big polytunnel I used to lamb the sheep in might provide the foundations! The tube bases are still there, set in blocks of concrete, and a scaffolding pole slips neatly into one!! So, if I can get scaffolding, that will provide the framing.

But what to use for the sheeting? What's good and cheap? I'm offered 0.7mm box profile, 8 foot long, but the man is asking £8 each for them -- secondhand!!! Chipboard is a LOT cheaper and I'm told it is OK if painted with a good waterproof paint. Any ideas?

Jack, Chipboard is ok for the inside if kept dry but if it gets wet and is unpreserved it can just expand and blow apart, not sure what a cheap alternative would be but better to build good and build to last i would say.

Go for the profile sheets. £8 is cheaper than decent ply and will last 100 times longer. Chipboard is the worst thing possible to build from, whatever you paint it with. If you are going to use timber go for a marine ply or at the very least, outdoor OSB and a good coat of timbercare.

Yes, it is good stuff. The trouble is I'm a skin flint and a roofer told me I should get cheaper! KK's trolley system cost about a fiver. (Mostly scrap materials).

Just located a supplier of box profile (new) at 80p per foot, so that £5.60 for 7 ft sheets. The problem is going to be transport. But I might use this example to haggle down the price of the second hand stuff!<vbg>

Jack is that your rear end making that squeaking noise??????? only messing, hope you get a bargain, good luck with the trolley system.

I had a conducted tour of Varmint's breeding facilities today down south of Perth. I must say I was VERY impressed. A thoroughly professional set up and far more extensive than I had imagined. What a modest fellow he is!

Only problem, it has caused feelings of guilt that all my material is lying in a heap still waiting for me to get to grips. And this in horizontal sleet. Don't ya just love the north of Scotland in "spring"?
