Wow!! You're really lucky... A Gyr/saker has a present!! I think it will be better a parent raised bird. Other people might have diferent opinion... Let's wait to hear it from the more experienced

depends what you want to do and how much time you have. Imprinting is VERY time consuming and can have some problems but also some good points.

if in doubt PR

Yep, that's what I think. Imprinted birds are better suited for demonstrations, and those kind of things... Even tough there are a few species that I would prefer to be parent raised (Old world vultures, eagles and some falcons)...

wants to give me a Gry/sakerfalcon
Why is he giving it??What do you need it for??i.e. What you gonna fly it at? Its stupid just to have a falcon cos its "free",get your land and quarry sorted first and if you want a falcon, get one to suit, example,i would love a Peregrine, tried for years to get land to fly one consistently, cant do it,so wont get one...what i have got is land suitable for a Merlin or Merlin hybrid(fancy a Per or Gerlin)..thats what ill get...not being horrible but its amazing the amount of people who got Sakers,Gyr/sakers etc sitting on blocks for years..cos there white and "look so preety"....******s!!! (oh,yeah,"cos there £200)
Imprinted birds are better suited for demonstrations
Why is that then dude :?:

For demonstration I prefer some imprinted birds... Only my personal opinion, don't know how are they for falconry... I thought that parent raised birds, would probably be more "agressive" to hunt, but again I'm not a hunter, I only train birds for demonstration purposes...

Hiya Atomik,

I do both, for hunting and demo work (at the mo, I'm only training for display lol)
I think imprints r ok for displays, we use imprint owls mainly, most of the other birds are PR, as most of us (bar Mal) dont have the exp to handle and a fly an imprint without makin a mess of it by accident (spec. a falcon or harris, the diff birds like that) But we're ok with owls lol.
Yeah, imprints r great, cus they love the attension. PR, when manned and trained can b just as friendly as imprints, and fly just as good.
Once I'm more confident with the imprint owls, and get more info on falcon imprints, I would love to have a go, see what they r good at, bad points, good points etc.

I'd love a nice pere too, but the same as gaz, no propper land close by (sorry, but I cant drive yet! Mum n Dad dont like goin 2 far lol) But with the rabbits, pheasant and small fry leapin around, some friednly farmers and that, there's plenty for a nice gyr/saker and even a sakret to have a go at. I'm gona stick with me sakers and saker hybrids!

Some imprints will be agressive toward the handler if you do not know what you are doing in the first 3 months. And can put you off falconry for a while.
Julia not too sure about your english but if you think you can imprint this type of bird only being around it 3 hours a day you are not of this world! I suggest you read and read and read! ITS ALL ABOUT SOCIALISING MY DEAR! And never let it see you with food or feed when you are around.

Not being horrible Hawk-lady but unless you are totally sure you want to hunt game SERIOUSLY, I would recomend parent rearing. If I am right it sounds to me (from your english you said "I will the falcon of the featherplay flying!!") that you just want to lure fly the bird for fun?

If this is the case I am sure for a young beginner this will be exiting enough, it was for me when I was a kid. I think imprinting is a waste of good time and effort for lure flying for fun as the bird does not really need to pitch (speck out, go up), and flying parent reared birds to the lure everyday and not showing them natural prey will give them imprinting characteristics in no time at all. All though it will be parent reared it will be reliant on a human to swing its lure for it, at any weight. And it will not scream.

This is jut my opinion, don't take it for granted, listen to all opinions and decide for YOURSELF, don't be told what to do, the idea is to have fun! Enjoy!!

Hi Hannah! All the owls we fly are imprinted... and some of our falcons too, most of them are great (the sakers specially) but 1 or 2 are pretty hard to work with, for instance, there's a peregrine that we have to keep our eye on her every time (specially when theres new trainers / interns handling her) cause she nails you in a second  Imprinted Kites are really neat too...

I think I would never try to work with an imprinted eagle... I've heard a lot of crazy stories about it.
Do you ( or anyone else, maybe Varmint) have any info on this?

The only imprinted eagle I've handled was an harpy, and strangely, she was really quiet and calm, no typical signs of an imprinted bird... :?:
