Hello All,
Last year I was offered ( and accepted ) an ancient old Falconer's Pouch/Sporran. It is hammered metal with mythical creatures in it, with glaze/enamel still on in places. It is omelet shaped, with a chain to hold it to a belt. I had it identified by a specialist but would like to 1) Know more about it 2) find a willing buyer. It is museum quality and I believe it's from the Middle ages or older. I would be happy to email photos to anyone interested. I would even post them on here but do not know how!
I am not an antique dealer, or even a falconer, though I love watching and identifying birds. I am just a single woman in Oregon that is curious and collects odd things.
Please get in touch with me to get the photos emailed, thank you!

That does sound like a very odd thing!
Can I trouble you to post some photos for my own curiosity more than anything. You can host your photos on www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) and then copy and past the <img> link into a post here.
Thanks!

You should also contact the Archives of falconry in Boise. Curator John Swift and Kent Carnie can get you in touch with the right sources to find out the true age and value of this item. www.peregrinefund.org

Hello Betsy,
Where are you in Oregon? We are in the northeast but come to Portland twice a month and would love to meet somewhere and see it. You can also email photos to canvasfalcon@msn.com. Thanks for letting us know about this.
Best,
William and Lucy

Thank you for your response. I have taken this to an 'expert' appraiser who was not sure, and have sent it to Sotheby's and Bonham's but they don't know either! The appraiser in Eugene, Oregon, thought it perhaps was Estruscan, Roman or Greek, or Medieval. It's still a mystery as to the origin.
That is why I am on this Forum, aside from the fact of course that I love watching large and small birds, including the Bald Eagles and Osprey in my area. I never even knew about Falconry until I took possession of this item and started researching it. It has been and continues to be fascinating.

I agree with you, I am surprised no one has spoken up...hopefully they will!
If you look at the 'beast' on the right in the close up, you can see a hooded man's head with arm outstretched. You really have to look, it took a while staring at it for me to see it.
Also, under the 'beast' on the left, if you look you can see a man's legs and a horses legs/tail.
I have researched a lot of books and sites and this does look Etruscan or Roman. Were they Falconers? Does anyone know?
Thank you for writing, certainly we will find out..
