View Full Version : Falconry loophole for Hunting Ban
For your information;
British Falconry Club Council Policy on the Hunting with Dogs Act and its relationship with falconry
Some hunts believe that by taking a hawk or falcon out with a pack of hounds they will be able to exploit a loop-hole in the law enabling them to continue. Your council (supported by the Hawk Board) believes that such actions would certainly be negative for falconry; a sport that cannot be intermingled with hunting with hounds).
The exemption covering falconry in the existing act was included so as to ensure the continuation of traditional falconry. There is a serious danger that large hawks or eagles flown in the presence of hounds could place the wellbeing of the hawk or eagle at risk. Large packs of hounds in full cry are not easy to stop. Their aim is to kill the preferred quarry (fox or hare). Any raptor in pursuit of the same quarry would be at risk; doubly so if the quarry is actually being secured by the hawk or eagle on the ground.
At the council meeting held on 12th February 2005, it was requested that members of this club do not bring falconry into disrepute by attempting such an activity.
I would agree with this.

Me too! I have been invited to go out with the beagles. I am keen to see where these Devon hares are but but don't think it is good to have my bird set upon.

A forum member was offered a full time job, with house working for two hunts if he would fly Eagles, which they would buy for him?
Very tempting offer to some, but steer well clear folks, that path leads no where.....

It would be absurd to:
A) Fly an Eagle or Hawk with a pack of hounds.
B) Draw attention to Falconry in such a way that would bring it into the spotlight of the political attention of the Anti-Hunt biggots.
Beware of any hunt trying to exploit loop holes at the cost of falconry. I am 100% behind the huntsmen, I am in deep Quorn Country and have a long family tradition with the hunt. To exploit loopholes in such a way in my opinion is utter madness and can only be to the detriment of falconry.

Got to agree with you on this....i am sorry that hunting with dogs has been banned but i dont want the spot light to be swung on to falconry, but there again how long will it be before the tree huggers start on our sport
The spotlight will swing to falconry regardless so in the meantime we should all show falconry in a positive light and adhere totally to the law practise falconry in a sporting manner.

Folks the spotlight is coming wether you like it or not... I for one would go to any length to help the foxhunters. What I am reading sounds like the falconry world is burying its head in the sand and hoping it will pass them by. I have an easier way: VOTE! How many of you voted last election? Try campaigning for those who support ALL country sports and get the landowners/farmers to get out and VOTE....

this was on another forum sj
For the rest of this season - the Fitzwilliam Hunt will be using their new falconer with 8 birds ( a golden eagle and a marshal eagle will be arriving soon) to kill foxes flushed to him by our pack of hounds.
I can't wait to see it. Next season he will also be used to assist in autumn hunting and of course throughout the main season.

Hi Steve L
Well, it wont be long before a video of this "loophole" will be on the news. The Antis will want to have that on video especially. So I hope the "Falconry Headshed" are ready for it!

Steve, I follow on with the Fitzwilliam hunt every Sat and I have heard about them getting a falconer but I have yet to see or meet with him. I would love to see what will happen... As for the whole idea, at least give the guys the credit for getting an eagle and not a FHH (I heard rumblings of that already) Look at it this way at least it's believable... I don't think Joe Public is gonna believe a falconer with a peregrine will catch the fox. It's like trying to stop a freight train with a crowbar.....
