also, what makes him unsuitable for display work? shyness, aggression, hunting on his own?

Description a bit wrong really. I do flying experience days more than anything and he is not suitable to fly to guests.
Have spent many hours with him on fist and he just keeps biting everytime you go to touch him. He also is very footy will strike at your bare hand any opertunity he gets. Ok flying lands on fist but comes in very hard somtimes and you do have to watch him all of the time as he will fly at you even if you have not got your fist up. He is getting better with work and I sometimes think I should take him up to the top of our valley and let him go to see what happens. I get on very well with all of my birds but this one I have never got on with and I have tried and tried. So as you can see he is not suitable to fly with my guests around, just cannot take a chance on him hurting one of them.

Paid £500 for him. Was going to use for breeding but not into that and what I hear there is not many about. Don't really know what he is worth.
A little off topic but if my eyes see right why is this hawk wearing 2 pairs of jesses? Alf.
Hope these are ok

If you flew him you would understand, he only flies on my flying area which is not very big. He is such a git with his feet that it is a pain to remove them and put them back in for such a short time. Don't worry if he was flown out and about he would have them removed. When you hve him back on fist you have to lock his feet down quickly. Fancy coming and having a go?:yawinkle:
You have lost me there? Are you saying you thread flying jesses but you can’t take out mews jesses? Hey I would take him on no problem if you want to bring him up? Alf.

He has permanant flying jesses in but to weigh him we have to put leash and swivel on so as to keep hands away. Just havn't bothered to take flying jesses out lazy I know. Honestly he is the worst bird I have ever had to train. Me and him just do not get on and I have tried believe me. I was told my an old falconer to put a spoon in hand and stroke his chest so as to stop the biting but I tried it for 3 days an hour a day but he just kept on biting. Thought he was Uri Geller.
Everybody loves him but me, but perhaps I should start taking him out in our valley and flying him to see if this will help settle him. I have spent many an hour sat with him on fist but he just will not settle. Open to suggestions and don't say a gun.

As far as I know there has only ever been one breding pair of these in the UK, unless their youngsters has now started to breed.
I reared a few of them as chicks and they were VERY aggressive, its the only time in my life i seen a baby chick bite at me!!
However I also know a few of them who turned out to be as sweet as anything, and great fliers.
You said other people love him, do you mean he is ok with other people and it is only you and him who have this problem or is he the same with everyone?

He is the same with anybody that handles him. Other people just love the look of him and his flying. He actually flew at me today and I just missed fending him off and he hit me on the foehead nearly knocking me of my feet and leaving me me with a couple of cuts on frohead. He has taken my hat of twice but never had it on today as to warm. He has real character if that is what you would call it or attitude.
I think I will take him out in a more open area and see what happens.

Has the bird been entered?
No. He sarted to moult a short time after getting him last year solaid him up. Started working him just on my flying ground. Tried the other day walking away down track tosee if he would follow on but just sat there. As I say I have a lovely valley like a bowl and I just wondered if it would do him good to get out and about a bit. Our rabbits are just on way back after mixy last year. Do you reckon he would settle down if entered or taken out.
Seems to me if you’re flying with both mews and flying jesses at the same time you might as well take off or cut the flying jesses if you having that much trouble trying to change them with this hawk. I wasn’t being funny just noticed two pairs of jesses in one photo. Alf.

I do not think it would be the easiest thing to hunt with a jackal buzzard, they are similar to the common buzzard but with even smaller feet, so I find it hard to believe they would be very successful as falconry birds.
However they are beautiful birds and great little fliers as a display bird.
If you could get on top of the aggression it would be an attractive bird for any center to have in displays, they are extraordinary pretty, I think.
I would try with a complete change of flying ground, see if that makes any difference.

Clearly you've never been grabbed by a jackal buzzard :P
I help out down where Allan keeps his birds, and this bird does have a very powerful grip. Shame really I really like him, and I think its just character to be honest :supz:

Hi ,
I have three jackals at home . Two male's ( 4 year old and 1 year old ) and one female ( 4 year old ) . All three are very gentle , and are very fine characters .
I never had any problems with them . But I do have to say , their feet are very powerfull . I have also a coupple Red Tails , and I find the strenght in the feet the same .
The jackals are very noisy when flown . They always seem to feel the need to make lots of noise . There is always wel something that disturbs them and that they feel that they need to comment about it . So , for hunting it's a real disaster , because everyone and everything can always hear you coming because of their noisynes.
But , indeed , very beautiful birds to have and to fly .
But , I had once a red tail who had the same , footing , agressive , etc . I think it's in the head . I never could bring him to settle . Just the same as I read with you .
Search for a female , and use him to breed . But then again , maybe he will give it at his youngsters , so ...
Still , hope you find a solution , there aren't many of them around .
Greetings
DF
