i dont blame jk at all, but i do wish we had stricter controls on who can get a bird.. its sad how many owls can get used as novelty pets/ornaments.

i think the best thing to do, is to try and help these people, until something is done. it is heartbreaking though x

i guess this happens a hell of a lot, but its unfair to judge. my first bird is only 10 weeks and i too was able to purchase him easily, but that doesnt mean that he'll be sold on again, as he most certainly wont.
i do agree though that it should be harder to buy them. but what then, too many will be bred, breeders wont be able to sell them as easily and then what will happen?????? i dread to think.

i think the responsibility should lay with the breeder. the guy i got mine from is a close friend of one of my mates. he vetted my house, saw the mews and my other pets. also said that if i change my mind about the bengal to ring him and he'll take him back. only then did i walk away with the gorgeous little chap that i now have.

good luck to everyone out there hope you all enjoy your bird as much as i do

Ozz, i also got my bengal very easily. but my mews was not vetted. luckily i have a mentor and have worked with them for 9 months so i knew what i was doing and had help along the way. i also would never get rid of mine, he is part of the family now.

it is down to the breeder to make sure the birds go to a good home, and lets hope that they go around buying one the correct way and have done some homework.

My self and a freind had a heated discussion last week over what control should be implimented for all BoP's
The reason this started was that we heard that a fella who could hardly look after himself never mind birds has just bought An owl and a harris.

So should there be strict laws on all birds and not just a chosen few...?
Is the law to blame for these guys getting the birds or are the person who sells to blame?

this is just the same old thing,,
weve already discussed it,, and its been decided,, bop's are acceptable pets in the u.k.
there is no reason to think this person is any less qualified than anybody else purchasing a raptor from an ad,,
or selling them,,
i see no difference in a person with an owl in the living room, and a person with a pet harris hawk,,
its all ok,, its thier business not ours
if they want to kill em and taxidermy them,, they can
whats more,, they can all buy the proper clothes, and parade around claiming to be authorities, and open thier own falconry center,,
there is no cap, no control, and no shame,,
any person who wants ,can buy whatever bird of prey they can afford in the u.k. and do whatever they want with it,,

where does the buck end like - i was just thinking that before i came to your post
it think theres three potential people
1) the buyer - he is the one taking on the responsbility and he should try as hard as he can to be prepared for it
2) the seller - he should take responsbility for the birds he breeds - he should try as best he can to make sure he doesnt sell to just anyone!
3) us - we as falconers and participants in the sport should try our hardest to while promoting the sport also make sure people are aware of the commitments, what is needed etc and not just turn a blind eye to new comers! i thinkt this forum does a good job of that btw! not only that though i think we should deter anyone deemed unworthy - not in a snobby way but like 8 year olds who want a pet, or teens and adults who just want to show off. for thos people we should try and sway them to seeing the real qualities of falconry andif then if they just want a showpiece make it hard for them to get a bird - but if they do help them if needed for the birds sake!!

just my opion

Sarah, Not an attack or lack of respect. Your points are good but for me they do not go far enough, breeders have a duty in law to ensure both the safety of the "hawk" and the purchaser. It is long passed time the we had a licensing system in this country for falconers (difficult I know but in my view not impossible but vital). It is long passed time that falconers adopted some form of self regulation before the government under pressure from the RSPB or some other ill informed even idiot protection group jumps on theband wagon. There has to be a distinction made in the future between active falconers and bird keepers, both have there place but they deserve different considerations. Look forward to reading views on these thoughts.
