I suggest you look at some of Steve Swartze and Jon groves videos (both on IFF). One video has been posted here before,....if you go to the link it will take you to all his videos,.....partridge,...duck and pheasant hawking along with some others.

Qualtity hawking. I think Steve said he got a new High-Def camera,....so some more good shots should be up and coming. They get me all AMPED for this fall,......I could watch them over and over,....I want to get a friend to do some filming of the flights (only big ducks on the pacific coast,...but qualtiy flights as well).

Oh it's a long wait till Aug and eyass training starts!!!! Good Hawking dreams to all!!!!

Crazy!!! Love it. Lived in Cuba for 9 months!!! No Aplo's.

Anyone done a Gyr/aplo cross?? Seems interesting as pursuit falcon!! Anyone want to trade gyr/peregrine or peales for a top quality female imprint aplo,.....and first pic of young?!?!?!?

Anyway we shall see in the future.
Interesting falcon yet to be hybridized (aplo). I have seen a gyr/new zealand flown which has some similar qualities,....although many others,..(wing load). Open to negative comments!!!

Allow me to start a little side discussion...

When you guys and gals are digging around on YouTube and elsewhere for falconry and wild raptor footage, what sort of footage do you enjoy the most? I, for one, look for the best quality footage (clarity, high resolution, good color, smooth filming) and editing, accompanied by appropriate music (not always the kind I like to listen to while driving). I am always particularly glad to capture something special on film. This winter I snagged some neat footage of a wild golden eagle hunting gamebirds flushed by a pair of coyotes. However, if the quality of the footage is not superb, I tend to view such video as worthless for further production.

And, to stay on track...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnHnkYyRE6Y

This is a trained gyr flying bagged ptarmigan, not "gamehawking", but close enough to be included here, I think. What's important is that this clip has all of the qualities I look for in good video. It's clear, steady, well edited, and the music, though not what I sing in the shower, is very appropriate. I don't know what resolution the original video is, but anything that looks that good on YouTube is surely great in full size. To top it off, the subject is interesting and particularly special to have on film.

Thanks for the feedback,

Steve

Hi Steve,
your videos, particularly, roosters, pheasant hawking and partridge hawking are the best I have seen on the web. I am your age so I like the music you edited to it, too. The video you mention above, I know it from somewhere, I think it must have been "Wild America" from Marty Stouffer?
I guess one of the problems with films of gamehawking is that you won't see a falcon at an appropriate pitch ;) in a video on the web as the quality has to be downgraded. I guess that's one of the reason why you have only filmed the pheasants on the rooster video? But seeing how long it takes for Cargill to come down from what must have been around a 1000ft pitch is reward enough.
Keep on the good work

Why are you saying so? The amount of training of a bird to fly in that caliber is the same as in a bird flying the prey species you mention. A cock pheasant needs to be stopped by any means. I don't know about prairie chickens, houbara or herons as we either don't have them or are protected.
This thread was about the best game hawking videos online, and "Roosters" is the best! full stop! It is edited, has music in it and it shows falconry of the highest caliber! Unlike the prairie chicken videos, which are good, no question, but they are raw cut at best. And as you will agree Cargill must be at a very good pitch if you'd count the seconds from flush till impact, which can't be said from the Prairie chicken vids!
And the last video which you posted, is from Spain at a bagged hare, that certainly is not gamehawking?!

Yep, I believe it is from Wild America. I heard it was a gyr that belonged to Bob Berry but I can't recall where that info came from.

It's really hard to catch a good stoop on video and it gets exponentially harder with bigger pitches. A lot of my "Partridge Hawking" is shot in the very early season with young birds of the year and old birds not yet in shape. That's why you do see some short stoops. Come time when the snow hits the ground around here and I start hawking pheasants, low pitches are long gone. I film the pheasant flushing to be sure to catch the dramatic hit and to put better perspective into the clip. Exactly what you said about counting out the stoop is one of the things I meant to achieve. Filming late in the season when hawking grouse or partridge is hard. With partridge it is often impossible to know which one is the target, and with grouse the hit is usually too far away to be worth filming. Duck hawking makes for good filming too, and next year I'd like to film some of the pigeon work I use to condition my hybrid.

Thanks for checking out my videos and thanks for the compliments.

Sammy,

I'm not sure I quite understand what you're getting at, but I think you mean you prefer to see quarry in its natural habitat being hawked...? Funny thing is, try as I may, I will never find pheasants in their natural habitat as long as I'm hawking on this continent, so farm fields will have to suffice!

Speaking of herons...there is some neat video somewhere on YouTube of somebody hawking herons with falcons. It's a good watch but I can't find it anymore.

All the best,

Steve

I have seen the video (herons) as well,.....very good hawking. It is amazing how evasive large birds can be!! I was told it was filmed in Spain,......and the falcon was a g/p female.

I think there is a link somewhere on here to it.

You are right in saying that this guy is hunting herons i a country where herons have not the status of common game - but there are exceptions made on request, e.g. to reduce the damage at fish-breeders ponds!!!
When hawking with him in the mid nineties, he told me that he has permissions like that.
We wouldn`t do justice to this falconer to blame him directely or indirectely to have done illegal things, as long as there is no evidence!

Maybe he is a strange guy, but the flights of his birds at herons, gulls and crows I witnessed were in many cases top class as his training and treatment of his falcons was.
