I was having a conversation today with another forum member that is considering stepping up to a longwing, what would you advise for a first bird, his permission is pretty open with hedgerows, quarry mainly consists of corvids and pheasants

Really you want to decide whether to make it a rook hawk or a game hawk,as they are fundamentally different. For rooks a good tiercel peregrine will do u well or a pere x saker, for phezzies id get a female peregrine, granted they dont like hedgerows but they are great on phesant. Or get one of each, fly rook in the summer and game in the season! Good luck, longwings are hours of fun!

I would strongly discourage anyone attempting to fly a Tiercel Peregrine at any type of corvid its wrong, you will end up with bird having an injury. Hybrid female or meduim size female Peregrine if your going go down the crow hawking avenue. Again if you chose game hawking as your discipline medium sized female Peregrine or one of the permitation hybrids widely available......my preference... Peregrine/saker or Peregrine/prairie 'cause I have not seen a bad one fly.
Good luck

I'd go for a peregrine /saker female for a first longwing .fly it at game ,if things go wrong try it on corvids.

before he looks at flying a falcon at Corvids how big is his permission?, to fly corvids well you need access to a good area of ground to be consistent , if you dont have access to enough ground to get reasonable slips at corvids most days my advice would be don't' bother, he will just spoil the falcon

Thats going to be quite hard to get consistent slips on a patch that size as they soon wise up to you and get hard to approach

I'd be giddy for a lanner possibly a pereXlanner but that'd just be me if I was on your side of the pond.
