I think you need to ask somone who has already tried them out.

I have never used one but I would not use a top like that. Doesn't look safe to me for a bird not used to poles. May be a bit difficult for it to scamble up.

as the leash comes out of the hole in the side you have to think your bird will be twice the distance down the pole and will have to work hard to get back up.

I'm not being over critical brian. I would make a few adjustments, especially for a new gos (if thats what its for)

No guys it does not work like that.

I cant really see how it works but I would have the knot where the hole is and have the leash going up through the middle of the astro. so it only goes a few inches down when bating.

Also I would think about having a smaller top if possible and maybe a larger pole to make them similar size.

Or maybe a cone shaped bit of carpet it can kind of grip a bit with its tallons to help a bit.

the bird is secured with its swivel tight to the top so all its got to come and go on is the length of the jessies,,, the top is 16" in diameter ,, jessies are 7" in length so in theory the bird wont reach the edge... as i say just a prototype ,,

Can you explain how the bird is tied and so on?

brian if you use my plans there will be no damage to your bird they cant bait over the edge my gos and harris have been on it from day 1 of manning but dont leave overnight on them just in case they get spooked cheers

give me 10 mins ill draw a plan

BrianM

there is a hole in the middle of the top ,you pass the leash down the middle if the upright till the swivel is tight against the top,, then secure the leash through the hole useing falconers knot.. all the freedom the bird has is the length of jessies

Ok I see.

I may be a bit concerned about breaking the foot if it can not reach the end. but still dives off.

Surely it would be best to be able to go over a few inches. then have to turn and flick itself upright. Surely this would cause foot damage. broken bones.

omg when the swivel is at the top hole it rotates with the bird ,,but you do have to make sure the jesses reath the edge of the top

BrianM

 i thought it was better not to have the bird reach the edge,, rather than dangle at all.. live and learn i suppose

BrianM

so the bird should reach the edge hawkman ???

yes mate so he can flip back round if they bait.. otherwise the weight of the body could snap legs and toes

Whats the base made of dude??is it heavy??...it looks like wood and aint very big..we had trouble with ours tipping at first..so we all use metal garden parasol bases.

BrianM
11-03-2005, 08:12 PM
hi gaz ,, the base is a plastic tube 8" in diameter 5ft high that i have fixed an old block spike to but like you say it wasnt very steady,, so i cut a disc of 3/4 ply 20" in diameter,, drilled a shug hole for the spike to pass through,,,, job done steady as a rock

BrianM

is it too big hawksman???

HawkMan69UK
11-03-2005, 11:50 PM
not thati can see a problem with it being big mate the only problem i could see if any would be tail damage if it constanlty resting on the astro turf but im sure you would notice that but hawks do tend to edge over to the sides anyway...just keep an eye on it mate and make sure the jesses are that little bit longer to combat the problem
cheers
