Unfortunately this item is illegal under British law, it would be classed as a disguised weapon as you can't tell what it is until the spike is drawn (it falls in the same category as a sword cane). The law states that you cannot manafacture, sell or buy or offer to sell or buy these weapons.

I just thought i'd let you know as i wouldn't want anyone getting in trouble.

3. The Schedule to the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order 1988, which specifies offensive weapons for the purposes of section 141 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988, shall be amended by the insertion into paragraph 1 of that Schedule after sub-paragraph (n) the words—
"(o)
a disguised knife, that is any knife which has a concealed blade or concealed sharp point and is designed to appear to be an everyday object of a kind commonly carried on the person or in a handbag, briefcase, or other hand luggage (such as a comb, brush, writing instrument, cigarette lighter, key, lipstick or telephone).".

This item doesnt appear to be disguised as an everyday object - which a sword cane would be.

If, however you can produce the legislation that makes this item illegal in the UK we can look at the issue again.

Personally, I think you'd stand out a bit if you were walking around with a sword cane in the 21st century!!:lol: I wonder if that still counts as an everyday object?...does it?
I'd take my chances with the bodkin and argue my case (or appoint Hattie to argue my case!!!;)) on the grounds that I would only have it on my person when I was specifically, and obviously, out hawking....Your Honour!!

Which is the defence afforded under the Criminal Justice Act 1988 for carrying any bladed or sharp object about your person.

And you have to be pretty damn short to be walking with a 250mm cane in one hand and supporting your stride.

Sorry back on topic and buy away people:lol:

I had something similar that i'd made but instead of a spike it had a slim blade, it was confiscated by the police and thats what they told me. (i was shooting at the time, so it wasn't like i was walking around marks and spencers)

like i said, i just didnt want anyone to end up in trouble.

Thanks for that Craig we are glad you are simply looking out for your fellow falconers.

As you can see above FHF is versed in the law and I am sure it will be alright.

Had you presented the police with the above info you may not have had a problem?

possibly, but the police seem to do as they please. The did however refer me to the Home office website which has a section on prohibited weapons. they also said companies such as "crkt" have withdrawn the sale of there "spikes" for this reason. (might be worth a look)

Falconers should stick together, its the only way to protect our sport in our current climate. The government is banning field sports left right and centre, so we should stand together and not give them an excuse.

Craig - unfortunately you are right when it comes to the police. They do not always know the letter of the law, and in certain situations it is easier to give up your knife etc at the time rather than face being arrested etc for refusing to comply. Which would be, if nothing else, extremely inconveient!

However I would say to anyone else faced with that situation, and do hand over their knife etc, that they should later complain to the Chief Constable and demand their knife back, should they have a valid legal reason to be carrying it.
