Are there any rules or guidelines to follow?

Depends what birds you're talking about. The bird will only build a nest or scrape big enough for its needs. You obviously need to put in a ledge big enough for the nest. I normally use a 3' x 3' for Hawks, with a 6" front to stop young chicks from making their way out.

Someone told me recently they use an old motorcar tyre. Doesn't help much on size but it sounded a good idea.
I suppose you should expect the nest to be similar to what it would be in the wild. For a gos, about the size of a buzzard's nest?

I was speaking wit Dave Jones and he told me 1,5 meter with 1,5 meter. I did it like he said and my female is very happy. I still cant resize my pics so I will send it to you and you resize it and put it here if you want HM!

Do a search on Google for ImageReady. I think there is a free download copy. I haven't tried it (the free download) but I do remember seeing the site. It is a good program and shows your pix in various resolutions and download speeds so you can pick the best compromise.

Use paint to size your pics. open the pic with paint, click on image, stretch/skew and change the %, but both the same.
Tyres are good for falcones, I think they are to small for goshawks. 1,5 times 1,5 sounds a good size for Goshawks.
take care

I have since found that a metre will do nicely and preferrably without corners where some young can get pushed up against.

Paul i used a plastic bread basket, the type sunblest etc use for carrying bread to stores, they work a treat for gosses, plus they are dead easy to attach cover and foliage to due to there make up,in fact i personaly dont think they can be beat, just go to a local store and look at one ,you will know where im coming from once youve seen one...Colin.ps the corners are dead easy to pad out like a real nest and ive never had a prob with them.

Paul, i always use a large tyre for my goshawks. Ideal would be one from say a 4x4. The one i am using now is from a 16" rim and has a 225 width.
Remove 1 of the walls and you end up with approx a 26" diam.
I usually half fill it with twigs and supply the rest to let the female finish the job.
Found it to be very successful with all the gosses.

Great I was thinking this would work well but was concerned about the steel wire? Do you have a picture?

I pack play pen sand into a tyre and i mean pack leaving a natrual cup
put lay landies all around the tyre and chuck loads of long clean green grass in pen before eggs are laid
last year though I cut a loads of small thin shoots branches twigs etc (hazel)
tied together and bent to a circle then packed with lay landie as with tyre
that worked fine too heres a piccy of that but the harris,s have redecortated by now and its hard to see

First time i used a tyre i was a little concerned about the odd wire that was sticking up so i went round the edge with a blow lamp to smooth it out.;)
Since then i got real technical:P i now split a piece of hose pipe and put it round the edge.
