Guys lets make this an archive to be proud of? Submit pitures of bells and their suppliers, nothing else.
This will serve as a visual guide when people are referring to certain kinds on the forum and will help those of us that do not know a particular kind or the manufacturer.

Well, I think I was probably one of the first people to make them in the UK, so I ought to be able to repair them! Not talking about badly busted and worn out bells but cracks can be repaired.
How about sending me a couple of pairs? I'll mend one pair in return for keeping the others, my choice. That is the deal I had with a mate. I got a nice pair of Asborno's!<g>

A couple of tips about bells. First, you can sometimes improve their tone by boiling them for 20 minutes. I am not kidding! They get bits of fat and stale meat inside which stops them working and boiling will remove this.
Next, if the bell begins to sound a bit flat, look carefully at the ends of the slits. Eventually, they crack here. The split can be re-soldered with special solder and they will be as good as new.
Last, old bells are best because the tone comes from the hardness of the metal. Brass and its alloys are different to steel as they harden as they are worked. In use, bells are continually worked by being banged on perches etc and the clapper inside is bashing against the walls of the bell -- this hardens the metal so they sound even better! Eventually, of course, they wear out or split.<g>

If you have a bell that sounds flat, you can also heat it up on a hot plate until it is just about to glow. Then let it air cool. It will bring back some of the sound. I have done it to some of my Noble bells to get a little more life out of them.

My guess is that you are burning off all the fat and organic matter that gets into them by doing this. Just make sure you do not cool them too quickly, or you will anneal the brass and lose the tone.

That is what saves the bell a bit is annealing it with the heat. I have heard of many falconers doing this over here so I tried it and it worked. I don't think that any fat could get into the bells when they are mounted on the squirrel chaps.

Falconer,
Martin Jones keeps the same Lahore bells as other suppliers, they all come from the same source. He's just a lot more expensive, so if you drive a Rolls then buy from him!
All the best,

Funny Bell story!
My mate Alan is obsessed with finding the ultimate bell! we were talking about a new pair he had just bought and was not totally happy with the tone, so we decided to tone change "Old style" by dropping one on to concrete from a great height, he didnt believ me until we did one and the tone changed slightly (Cause the bell slit was altered by the impact)
I joked that to radically change the tone he needed to throw it harder still, which he did.
No harder still!
I grabbed the bell and threw it with all my might at the wall, it splatted and was totally ruined!
The moral is that dont ever let anyone who hasnt the slightest comprehension about bell manufacture near you beloved tinckly items!

But are Lahore bells considered good bells ??

Hello Guest !
The Lahore bells are certainly an adequate bell and are purpose made hawk bells. They have a good tone, fair clarity but are made of brass and therefore soft. If your bird plays with its bells they won't last more than days, if not then they could happily last you a season.
My question when buying bells would be 'How much do I value my bird'? - then I buy the best, Noble bells. (MY opinion) I have tried Peales bells and found those quite appalling but others swear by them. I believe that it's a very personal thing and that an individual's hearing will sway their judgment. I have also picked up many cheaper bells at the Falconers Fair, rung them and put them straight down again.
Beauty is now in the EAR of the beholder.
Regards,
Red
Best price by far for Noble bells is Westweald Falconry

Hi Red very true, most of the falconry equipment poroviders sell Lahori bells,& these days tone & quality are pretty consistently good, however many years ago I imported a 'suitcase' full of bells from a well known LAhore bellmaker very cheap about 10p each, but had to throw most of them away tone and qulity of fabrication was abysmal!

Most of the work is contracted out to the local peasantry. I was told they make the bells from old .303 catridge cases!
Sounds as if you got a bulk deal on the rejects. Lahore bells do vary in quality. The guy I used to deal with was Fayyaz Hussain. He obviously did alright as his son went to London University. He used to produce an impressive list of passage falcons for sale -- with prices only the arabs could afford! :(

While on the subject of bells. I am still using the Asborno bell that was on my first Gos when I got her 13 years ago. It has been used every year as a tail bell and has been on my current gos for 10 years. It still sounds as good as new and has not been reworked or repaired. Asborno no longer makes bells and I believe noble are supposed to be the equivelant. How many people are using 13 year old noble bells. I would be interested to know.

I use my smallest old bells that dont sound too loud on the leg in the moult chamber. Just so I can hear what the bird is up to. Plus it seems earily quiet without the tinkle of bells
