View Full Version : What bars are best?
Ok,
so theres been alot of posts saying whether bars or mesh is better, but i havent see much posts on saying which bars are best, copper pipe? the insolution tubes used for wires?bamboo canes? reinforcement bars?
Ive also thought about using the sticks from brushes, a little bit of give but not too much and pretty strong too. what do yous think

20mm galv conduit with 25mm white or black plastic conduit over the top. This is the ideal method to use as it cushions the birds feet on impact, but I would use even smaller diameters as this makes it harder to grab onto. I use 1/2" (15mm?)electrical conduit on it's own and have had no problems.

Ah a fellow sparky!! Cant get it here Weasel, the smallest we use is 20mm. Its failed electricians (plumbers) that use 15mm lol!!
my da's a spark but he dont have any of this stuff

Iam not plumber am a pipeologist.
sean i used 10mm copper pipe, a)cos i could put my hands on some at the time, b) as i had no idea of a birds reaction in an avery i thought it would atleast give if the bird hit it perticularly hard, and c) cos it looks good and will look better when it weathers. i drilled my timber and just sloted it in place,if any of them get damaged its just a case of taking one out and fitting another.

The only problem with copper is the security aspect. If anyone wants to get in to your bird its real easy to bend, even if they **** themselves and leg it the bird can still escape once the bars are parted. Conduit is made from steel and believe me its hard to bend. You can pick it up at any electrical wholesalers Sean.
whats the price h4wka? and how much apart would u place them

Over here the 15mm(1/2") is one of the common sizes for small branch circuits such as wall plugs etc..., but the 20mm(3/4") is most used for getting wire from A to B
Over there, you run on 220volts right? Is it 2 phases of 110 each or one 220v single phase circuit? What frequency do ya'll run on?50 or 60?
Sorry folks.....electrician thing.....

Hey Weasel,
Didn't see you at the Irish Festival. Do you use bars alone or do you have both bars and wire mesh (bars on inside and wire on the outside)? A few years ago a local falconer had his peregrine pulled through the bars and killed by some kind of predator. He only had bars on the windows.

20 mm white plastic coduit, 60mm centers, easy to clean, no painting and gives a bit when birds crash into it, max height 30 inches, after this its starts to bend a little, and the main reason its cheap

I was there friday night and all day sunday except for a hunting time out during the day.I normally use just the steel bars, but with the issues of West Nile Virus around here, I added steel screen mosquito mesh on the outside.

My sponsors mew needed them replacing when I went to test the bars...I broke several just by pushing against them.......

i have wire mesh with bamboo in front of it.
the wire is the secure part and the bamboo makes a barrier to save jester getting to the wire.
has jester even broke the bamboo?
and what do you gusy think of using bsticks of brushes as bars?

Only thing I could see being a problem would be splinters from the wood. Bamboo doesn't splinter like wood does, plus the fact that wood can rot.
