What sort of size should an aviary be for a freelofted CB or HH?
Also what sort of distance should a perch be from the aviary wall to minimize a messy wall?

Thanks in advance

Mine is 5x2.5x2.5meter. Distance from the wall: never enough, and thats just the wall, distance from the fence: allways too short...
If thats whats bothering consider falcons...

imo just build it as big as you can. Theres no logic in making it the minimum size just because you can.
The walls WILL get dirty, so get used to regular cleaning out...

Thanks for the replies.

Without taking a JCB to my garden I can comfortably fit a 12'x6' aviary, will this be ok for a HH or a CB?

And the perches, what is the closest I can have them to the walls without causing any problems? I know I have to avoid the tail banging against the wall so what is the closest I can safely put them. I was thinking about 18 inches from the wall but I am checking because the further away from each other the perches are the more excersize the bird would get jumping from one to the other(I presume).

I'm trying to draw up a plan for a possible aviary and working out cost etc...

If your bird gets flown on a regular (daily) base i think the domensiosn are ok, but minimal. I find my own aviary minimal, but this is the biggest i can fit in the garden, and my birds get flown daily.

Even if you place your perches in the middle walls will get dirty.

I have placed my perches depending on the sun, winddirection, surrounding activities, etc.

The best thing (at least thats what i think) i have done is to make some sort of 'wiggle'-perch: a piece of wood hanging from the ceiling with two ends of sisalrope. Birds just love to rock and i think its good for muscles, coordination, etc...

Thanks TZ, I might have to redesign my garden a bit then, can't guarantee I'll beable to get out everyday.

The best way to stop the mesing up on the walls is to put up a polythemne sheet behind his perch. Every few days, take it out, hose it down, spray it with one of the disenfectants and put it back.
My HH enclosure is about 4x3x2.8m

take a look at some earlier threads

i presure wash my painted walls, don't know what harris' hawks pass, but it don't shift. on the perch theme,i have to agree with the other guys and you would be very lucky to sight your perches and get no mess, one word of warning,if your going to have an enclosed avery with windows, you want perches at the windows, just be carefull of the gap between perch and window, too wide and your bird may pass it and hit the window and then fall between perch and window, too short and your bird may hit the window while trying to perch mine are set 25cm back from the windows.
the plastic is a great idea,i had the idea of several coats of good quality gloss would alow me to hose down the walls,no such luck it stains like mad,my next job is a removable wall screen.
