I thought I had better start my own thread regarding our 2008 Female Goshawk. I have posted some notes on her progress on other Threads but I feel it is a little unfair using other members platforms to talk about our Hawk even if it was only done as a comparison.

She is now 30 days old, I don't have a weight for her today as she would not stay still long enough to get one, yesterday she was 1205gms (2lbs 10 1/2ozs) and I expect her to make 3lb+ by day 35. This is the day that most of the Breeders seem to think will give us the approximate flying weight of the Hawk.

She is bred from a Male bred by Mick Kane called Jenson who is a very large Hawk the Mother is a Chris Brown bird 4lbs+ fat weight, Paul (Hawkmaster) calls them the pair of Females this is the first time Jenson has bred we tried last year with a different Female but she would not accept him as a mate. This year with another Female he bonded well and they laid 5 eggs the first was infertile and we knew it would be as he was having trouble working out how to copulate properly and kept mounting her from the head end, there was then a gap of 7 days before the second egg was laid and we had almost given up hope of any more eggs in the clutch. They then went on to lay another 4 eggs. 1 of these was broken in the nest so we decided to remove the eggs and give them dummies to sit rather than to risk any more breakages. The weather was really bad here we had winds of 85/90 MPH that took the net off the Hack Chamber we then had a week of torrential rain and then we had a snow blizzard and night frosts. We ended up with 3 fertile eggs that ran in the incubators for 37 days at 37.4c 2 of them expired on that day and one pipped. We opened the dead eggs and found perfectly formed chicks and could find no reason why they had died before pip, the weight loss was spot on so it was just a case of some things are not meant to be. So we ended up with one chick. So at least we have something out of the season.

Her hatch weight was 47.08gms and she lost weight for 1 day and has steadily gained weight from there on.
Day 1 45.68gms
Day 2 49.75gms
Day 3 54.60gms
Day 5 76.08gms
By day 9 she was 207gms
Day 14 612gms
Day 20 920mms
Day 29 1205gms (2lbs 10 1/2ozs)

So far we are very happy with her progress and she is growing well. She spends the day in the office with us as there is always someone here along with the kid's, dog's etc she seems to be happy with the way things are here.
I will add a few pic's when I can find them on my other PC.

Now we just need to find a name for her as we can't think of one we all agree on I wanted to call her Button (as she is a daughter of Jenson ) so come on Guy's and try to come up with one for us.

Yeah stay away from my bridge.
She will be noisy single kill or not Saxon was single killed all season except 1 outing and i flew him 44 days straight and took 45 kills and he was still noisy impeccable manners but noisy you may be lucky with so many other birds around she may be quiter.

You can get your own Bridge in Bristol M8 we know where the Rabbits are hiding

We did not have that problem with Trojan I think she had about 10 kills and was fed on them and she stopped being a noisy bitch but all birds are individuals so anything can and will happen so a lot of it will be down to luck but there will be no shortage of quarry for her as you already know :supz:

Trojan was a swap imprint mate and usualy it is the case that they go quiet however u may get lucky you certainly are not running short of quarry no way.

We are going to try a bit of trickery here Wez, what we are going to do is put Button on the grass at the back of the property near where the old weathering's are and then to bring her round to the main weathering lawn later on, so she will think she has been moved to another property just to see if this calling that happens with Imprinted Goshawks is just down to Imprinting on a certain area with a certain View. So we will let you know if this works or not as we go along. If you remember with Saxon 95% of the time he was here he was silent but as soon as you took him back home to your garden he kicked off again. He hardly ever called here even when you were about so I just have a feeling the noise was related to where he was and not who he was with.
What do you think :)

I dont see this Helping mate because the bird will imprint quite strongly on the falconer and the daily surrondings ie iff she is taken into the office to be weighed and sees the weathering lawn everyday it will be part of her daily life the reason a swap imprint works so well is how dramatic the change in enviroment is to the bird.

When i take on an imprint now i accept that screaming is part of the process and try to focuses and good manners and Hunting.
The hunting you should have absolutely no problem there ( git )

Wez if she makes a noise it won't matter M8 as I don't have any neighbours to worry about. I just want to try this as an experiment for the future if it works great if not then back to the drawing board. With falcons I have found that the noisier ones tend to make the best breeding stock. As you say manners has to be top of the list for us as a guaranteed kill per day is not something we have to worry about here. The only problem we had with Trojan hunting was trying to get out for a bit longer, most days it was leave here and be back within 1/2 hour we even tried to pick the longest or most difficult flight for her but she was just too good and killed no matter what, the other problem was we would think she was going to take on a really long slip and off she would go and nail something within 50 yards of us  one of the pitfalls of being surrounded by Quarry when you are single killing with a Goshawk.

RedNoseK9
24-06-2008, 10:44 PM
Yeah it is definately worth a try.
Single kills will definately do the job with manners anyway

We managed to weigh Button this morning, we had to find a bigger box as she just jumped out of the other one, any way we managed it and she weighed 2lbs 12 1/2 at 31 days old. I have just looked at Jim's (Outflying) bird Fletch and his Male is a long way in front of my Female in feather growth yet there is only 2 or 3 days difference in age. Before some one tells me the Females take longer to mature than the Males I already know that but I was just surprised at how much difference there was between the sexes. I haven't taken any Pic's today but will try to take some tomorrow if we are not too busy

We see it all the time with the Falcon Chicks but there just seems to be so much difference with the Goshawks even Harris hawks don't seem to have this difference. It is just a shame we do not have another chick from the same clutch to compare it with. Never mind there is always next year

Hi Terry

I am imprinting a female 50/50 bred by Goldie for a friend but things have turned that it was originally a male i was doing but hey, now caught in a dilema as my friend is adamant on the male so it looks like i will be taking her on as well as Kiesha my other goss also bred by Goldie from which we had a great season last year so things will be busy this year.
