Hello
I´m from Spain. I ´m new in falconryforum. Excuse me for my English, is very bad. I am waiting for my first falcon, a falco tinnunculus.
I wanted to ask a thing:
Some time ago I have curiosity as the falco eleonorae. In Spain nobody knows of the utilization in falconry. I would like to know if in other places it has been in use, baby or it flies away. It is a beautiful falcon. I believe that it has possibilities in the falconry. Thanks and regards

As far as I know there has only been one case of Eleonora's being trained to hunt. This was on the Baliaric Islands and the hawk was entered at Shrikes. It was unsuccessful and so no one has really tried since. I think that the hawk might do well on the Common Snipe but I suspect that they don't really have the guts, or else someone would have done it already. I tried to get a breeding pair from Spain but had no luck as they are very expensive for a hawk that is currently no good to a falconer. They have some value in demonstration work I guess but not so far for hunting. Social imprints would be the way to go.
Let us know if you try. Also if you are getting your first falcon have you considered a Lanner (Faco Biarmicus) as opposed to the Kestrel. The Lanner is larger, so more margin to survive an error in weight control; the Lanner is probably the cleverest falcon and so easier to train and although few people hunt with them nowadays they are excellent hunters as the medieaval falcons proved.

It was a curiosity. At the moment I can't allow an Eleonora's. But the information is very interesting. I didn't have idea of that there was a breeder in Spain. I ask on the Eleonora's in a forum of falconry of Spain and nobody knew of the topic in falconry. Thanks for the information and the welcome.

I have known some of the more experienced falconers in South Africa to take on an Eleonoras just for fun, but that is all they really were, there are far better birds with more size as has been mentioned already that are better.

Pretty bird though anyway!
