Picked him up from Mick Kanes on thursday, came out of the pen at 895g, although he had food in his stomach, his crop was empty.

Just arrived home!

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/mattpatch/Ginna/Image066.jpg

Relaxing a bit about an hour later.

He worked the block out within an hour and a half, and spent the night on a cadge in the living room.

Friday he was blocked out all day, while he emptied his system out.

He fed off the fist last night at 795g, and stepped up tonight off the block at a little under this.

Should be jumping tomorrow, and I expect he will be free somtime around next weekend.

Then the fun starts as serious fitness training takes over in preperation for crow hawking!

Good sized GP, good luck with him ! my mate had one last year that started at 685g it was a flying machine, ringing quarry into the heavens, unfortunately it got hit by a car on the motorway.

Maybe male gyr x peres are going to be the pursuit Kings and take over the top slot from female pere x sakers.

For those that cant be bothered to come with the rest of us into the 21st century, he came out of the pen at 1lb 15 3/4 oz.

And up until today I was expecting him to fly between 1lb 10 oz and 1lb 11oz, but with the session I had during my dinner hour today, Iam questioning wether I need to take him much lower that 780g (1lb 11 1/2oz)

Maybe male gyr x peres are going to be the pursuit Kings and take over the top slot from female pere x sakers.

I have a feeling that this will hold true for a couple of seasons, but once those that dont understand the work that has to be put into a male falcon (of any type) to get it consistently catching crows, they will get bored of there male gyrxpere chucking crows, and go back to the trusted female perexsaker!

He came a leash length today at 780g, and is coming on nicely, deosnt give a hoot about the dogs, strangers, or cars, so progressing nicely.

I will take some more pics when it stops raining long enough for me to turn the camera on!

OK just got a quick session in between downpours, moved to a different area, but decided I might be pushing my luck a bit getting the lure out, settled for a couple of quick 6 or 7 foot hops. Lure out tomorrow!

Took out this afternoon, easily coming 15 yards to the fist, weight will have to come down a tad more. Introduced to the lure, and stepped back up nicely, appetite is definatly lacking at the moment, but should improve as work load increases.

Here are a couple of pics that I took on the weathering lawn this morning!

Bloody weather!!!!!!!!!!!

Took him out late afternoon, both of us got completely **** wet through, but he is now coming 20 yards to the fist, and has been introduced to the lure, (wether it sank in or not is another question, lol).

Appetite is still low, and he needs to loose a tad more weight, before his response is going to improve, Dont get me wrong he is pretty much instant, but he also spends just a fraction too long thinking about things, and checking the scenery out.

Turned a corner tonight, coming very quickly to the fist over 100 yards, handled himself ok in the wind! 50 yards to the lure, instant response, a bit nervy when eating on the floor, but a slight (7g or so) loss will cure this. Should be free some time around saturday or sunday, then the fun realy begins!

I hate trying to take pics when Im actualy training, and am currently single handed, but once he is free, and I can keep him in the air for more than 30 seconds at a time Ill get the video camera out, (if I can remember how to work it).

Ill be home for a fortnight from sunday, and the missus is good with a camera, so Ill have to drag her along!:yawinkle:

Well lots has happened since my last post.

Flown free, on the 12th July, has been progressing nicely over the following 9 days, Lots of free flying, so that he gains in confidence, and I have just started serious fitness work with the lure, we are up to about 26 passes in 4 bouts, and I would expect him to be ready for his first slips in about 2 weeks time, (although it can take 1-10 days to enter a young crow hawk).

I have added a few pics, and before anyone gets on there high horse I know he has mews jesses on, I appologise before hand, for this major oversight, But I dont feel the need to explain myself, so if you want to set up the usual witch hunt when these things appear be my guest!

Well things are progressing nicely, we moved onto dragged crows yesterday, and things went swimmingly.

Some birds can be scared of the crow carcass first off, but this boy didnt even bat an eyelid, and just pilled in feet first.

Fitness training is still progressing, and the hot weather isnt helping, but we are upto about 48 passes in 2 bouts, which I can live with, I am realy starting to like this falcon, his caractor has taken while to come throug, but its coming through in bucket loads now, I will expect him to be ready for entering somtime around the weekend, then the fun realy begins.

MATT dont you take the mews jesses out when flying free m8 ??

Read the thread and the answer is there, left them next to the scales as I had been cleaning them the night before, not going to drive 30 miles back to the house to pick them up when I can twist the end of the jesses for the sake of 20 minutes flying, not with todays fuel prices anyway!

I am guessing that you came on here because I had a go at tigger, (if I am wrong I apologise) I cant believe people actualy encourage him!

why's that then?

Because Its got a bit of rot on the top, some people are sooooo picky.

Its been sat in the shed for about a year, and I fully expected it to be as I put it away last year, but Im ******ed if Im buying a new block, when I have 6 down at work, that are perfectly serviceable!

Took him out the other evening, showed him some crows, and it became obvious that his heads not quite there yet, another 4 or 5 days on the lure, and a few dragged crows, and we should be there. He' only been flying free for 3 weeks, even though he is fit, he needs to be mentaly ready aswell, otherwise it isnt worth owt.

More or less mate, he's close but close aint good enough in my book, he will need to be perfect before I try him again, funnily enough my mates got his brother (pulled 4 days earlier) and he is saying exactly the same thing. He would have put money on him being ready early last week, and has gone back to the lure for another week, seems that these gyrxperes are willing to lie to you, and hope they get away with it.........:P

Here is a bit of crappy video footage of him slamming a dragged crow early last week.

Havnt updated for ages, he is now entered as of last monday when he caught a gull by accident.

He was a bit hit and miss tuesday and wednesday, but I expect this with a young falcon to be honest.

thursday, first slip at a large (70 plus) flock of crows and rooks, and he powered into them, picked a crow and took it 6 foot from the ground as it panicked and baled out.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/mattpatch/Ginna/Image103.jpg

And I moved him to get him off the plough!

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/mattpatch/Ginna/Image111.jpg

Friday evening, first slip, he left the fist, as he entered the feild the crows lifted and he climbed up with them, picking his target, he turned it back into the feild, put in 2 shallow stoops, threw up 35 foot above the crow, and stooped more or less verticaly at it binding 25 foot up in the air.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/mattpatch/Ginna/2288a.jpg

And I had to move him again because of the horses in the feild.

Tonight Fist slip, taken over about 300 yards, the crows (15-20) rose as he made the 1/2 way mark, and he simply picked one, powered up into the flock and bound to it, goshawk style, not the best flight to watch, but just what he needs at this stage.

Flights at crows should always be direct, thats why its called pursuit hawking, hood off and off the fist.

once they leave, you can get stoops, throwups, mid air stalls, high flights, low flights, flights to cover, flights that just go and go, short quick flights, twisty turny flights, caught in the air flights, caught on the ground after bailing out flights, the list geos on and on and on.

Without 1/2 decent land and lots of it, you will be wasteing your time though.

I currently hunt over about 35,000 acres, split between hertfordshire, and nottinghamshire, and about 2/3 of this is viable for flights at crow.
