Anyone have enough experience with both Gyr/Anatum and Gyr/Peales hybrids to comment on the differences?

had a few of both. as you would expect the gyr/peales are bigger and may be a bit nasty. the anatum/gyrs are ok for size, the ones i have had were very sweet of disposition. they all are good game hawks capable of taking a wide range of north American game species.

I have to agree with Jim on this one. The Gyr x Peales seem to inherit the bad manners of the Peales although once trained they make excellent hunting falcons if you don't mind getting bitten

Here are a couple of photos comparing a gyr x peales and a gyr x anatum.
I'm holding the peales in back. I have to agree with the above statement based on these two individual tiercels. The anatum hybrid flew higher. It started out as a grouse hawk, where as, my bird started as duck hawk.

what a great post! the kind of things we want to hear about!!! its ok saying ive got a g/p ! but what is it really, was it bred for size or temperment?? who knows ,we falconers just take it for granted that a g/p is a g/p, ive had three, all of them different, never knew if they were bred from scottish, peales ( i doubt it) or whatever!

i will try to post up some pics of my new anatum/white gyr tiercel. i just brought him home today, he is not penned yet but looks pretty good sized. i have a rule-- i don't weigh birds until they get to the hunting condition(its a distraction to weigh birds that are not in condition) so we will see in a few weeks just how big he is. seems to be the normal easy going anatum hybrid. this years team looks like an exciting line up.

Jim, not enough people think like this. I am this way, and I learned it from the only guy I ever heard say it before you. Weights don't impress me in the least.

I would agree with what has been said above. However generalities aside,.....every falcon is an individual.
I have seen a placid female anatums take a chunk out of a friends nostril,.......still a hole/scar to this day!!!
Here are some pictures of white gyr/peregrines the one through the peephole is a very good flying gyr/anatums,....the other three are of two different gyr/peales. I will try and post a picture of two white gyr/peales immature 2009 male and female in the next day or two. Interesting thread.
Sincerely,

Hmmmm,
Could not upload the last two picture of a white gyr/peales on a duck? It said the picture exceeds the file limit? I thought I did resize it via my email platform? Does anyone know how to resize? Or I will try later.

Thank you, everyone who has posted a reply. The photos are really great.
It sounds like the birds, on average, turn out about like one would expect, but a theory is just a theory until you see the real thing. Thanks for giving me, and all of us, the benefit of your experience.
I've never flown a hybrid. My experience actually hunting with longwings is limited to a few Prairies and Peregrines. The birds I'm flying now are a seven year old female Anatum and a five year old male Anatum. They do pretty well but if anything ever happens to one of them, I'll have to break down and try a hybrid. Your input is a big help.
Here are some photos of a friend's female Gyr/Anatum on a duck flight. The photos were taken by Brian Sullivan. This bird is a niece to my female Anatum. She is a sweet bird, takes a high pitch, and has caught a lot of game, from Partridge to geese.

I wish you did too. I've certainly enjoyed hunting with shortwings and broadwings but when I trapped my first Prairie Falcon I was hooked. I've even learned to love working with bird dogs, and back in the days when I ran hounds, I didn't even consider a dog to be a hunting dog unless it would bite a bear.
