Thought Id post a quick introduction to my new arrival, half brother to the Ginger one owned by Mr Patching.
Brought him home last night and weighed him in at 2lb 3/4 oz, after a small cast and no food overnight, he was down to 1lb 15oz today. He was blocked in the garden with a maelstrom of spaniels and horses to contend with, and not one bate, this evening, I took him on the fist and he fed 2oz of beef and vitamin supplement, between each serving I hooded him, succesfully on each occasion and like a post :supz:.
My thanks to Mick Kane for breeding a top Falcon.
Let the fun commence:cool:

Sadly not mate, still a top bird though and like Mr Freckles a decent size.
Tell you what Matthew, I've made more progress with this bird in 3 hours than I did with the Pere x Saker in a fortnight last year:yawinkle:Ahh but has he got the freckles!

If this bird is for hawking DON'T and I mean DON'T tether it on gravel pea NEVER EVER the talons will get dull in no time and it will take a month or more to get sharp again. gravel pea is fine for display birds but not for hunting!!!!

Thanks for the heads up, but dont worry I'm well aware of the potential. He is being blocked in the back garden area briefly to introduce him to the dogs and horses, all part of the manning process. If this bird is for hawking DON'T and I mean DON'T tether it on gravel pea NEVER EVER the talons will get dull in no time and it will take a month or more to get sharp again. gravel pea is fine for display birds but not for hunting!!!!

1lb 14 3/4 oz today, not yet stepping to fist and a little flighty on the block and whilst walking with him on the fist, I need to cut him down further, but dont want to do it too quickly. Later he took 2 1/2 oz of beef from the fist and hooded like a post between each small offering for a total of 15 times. Here is a picture of his new home made hood, and one of him blocked out in the paddock...p.s. look no gravel

1lb 13 3/4 oz today, stepped onto fist for food and went walkies with my wife and her quarter horse, spent a couple of hours in the paddock with him this evening, lots of hooding practice and rewards. Here are a couple of pics of him fresh out of the bath, and on the fist in the paddock. Going to slow his weight drop down and introduce him to the lure in the next coupe of days.

His slow weight reduction is doing just that, he has gone up to 1lb 14 1/4 oz but is still stepping to and feeding from the fist:lol:, he is getting more and more chilled by the day. I am going to cut his weight back now back down to 1lb 13 1/2 ish and introduce him to the Lure. He is also now in an open fronted weathering in the garden with all of the hustle and bustle of mad spaniels and home life to de-sensitise him further. Leaving him hooded tonight to settle in to his new surrounds and sounds.

1lb 11 3/4 oz today and had a couple of tantrums in the last couple of days. Still not jumping to the fist but steps on (apart from tonight:evil:) and eats readily from it. Going to drop his weight sharply now to get to the next level...hopefully.

1lb 10 1/8 oz, 3 jumps to the fist and keen so put on the creance and flew him twice at 20 yards to the lure, ran the last couple of yards on each occassion, but nailed the ****** when he got there:D Fed him up on quail leg and head from lure and fist. Going to introduce him to lure with crow wings tomorrow evening.......

1lb 11 1/2 oz, had problems keeping his weight at 1lb 9 3/4 oz due to the warm weather for a couple of days then work and some "other stuff" got in the way over the last 48 hours. I had planned to fly him tomorrow but some generous soul over-fed him yesterday, so it looks like Sunday if I can get his weight down sharply to 1lb 9 1/2 oz ish by then. I dont know which of the two of us is more frustrated

1lb 10 3/8 Oz:confused:, so wont be flying today. Going to do some work with him on the creance later.:( He holds his weight extremely well. He didnt have food yesterday to drop him that little bit further and to get him keen for the big day, and he has only dropped just over an Oz in nearly 60 hours. I'll feed him today but keep his ration small to try and get him down to 1lb 9 3/4 oz for tomorrow.

He is holding weight because you have never taken him down to where he has used all his fat reserves, in my opinion.

1lb 9 1/8 oz, Odin flew free tonight. I was on my own with no slip man, but thought ****** it, now or never. I placed him on a convenient post, unhooded him, showed him the lure, then walked away into the wind. He stood and flapped his wings for 10 seconds and then up and away, he hovered above me like a bloody kestrel again until he relaised he wasnt going to get his food that way, circled away playing in the wind. He made a couple of nice passes before I offered him the Lure, great pick up, but didnt hood so well and bated as I tried to out his hood on. Onwards and upwards from now on.

1lb 9 1/4 oz today, George and Mark (Fenlands rescue, and Big Mark) came over for a cup of Tea (eventually) and a chat. Strong winds and driving rain for most of the day, but the rain subsided so we took him out for his second flight. Some could have said recklessly for a bird, low on condition, near standing crops, in a high wind, with very little flying behind him...still last years over caution with coco cost us a lot of flying, so we went ahead.
With an audience including 2 adults, 2 children, and a Goshawk it was a big day for him. He played a little in the air (including his kestrel impression again), and made a couple of attempts to take the Lure, one of them landing, running, and trying to jump up to ithttp://www.falconersforum.com/forum/images/smilies/rofl.gif Got him airborn again and let him do a close cirlce in the wind before letting him have the lure, pick up nice...eventually, hooded better. Going to start hiding the Lure now and encourage him to roam a little to help get his wings and then onto long slips.

Wild birds perch on stone and dont have needle fine talons, i understand what you mean if the bird was bating constantly, it would really wear them down, but i dont think they need to be like needles to catch quarry, so living on stone is fine.
i actually clip my hunting birds talons, because needle sharp talons can easily puncture the birds own foot when hunting and this is a big cause of infection and then bumblefoot. Which i learned to my cost (vet bills) when flying a perlin with needle talons, after i started clipping them i saw no difference in footing ability.
If this bird is for hawking DON'T and I mean DON'T tether it on gravel pea NEVER EVER the talons will get dull in no time and it will take a month or more to get sharp again. gravel pea is fine for display birds but not for hunting!!!!

First Crow today, not one for the purists but after hitting a couple and not binding it was pleasing to see him nail a corvid. Not the largest Crow in the world at 14.5oz (minus head), but at least a start to his crow hawking career. Some bad news today was that he has some damage to his right foot after the flight which led to some pretty heavy bleeding. Its now cleaned and bandaged and I'll be keeping a close eye on it over the next couple of days.

2 crows now under his belt but no luck today whilst out with Big Mark on the Cambs/ Lincs border.
It looked like it was going to be one of those days lots of crows in great places, but not in a great position for a good slip (busy roads, high winds/ wrong direction, close cover, corvids mixed with other game, wide rivers....the list was endless). We found 2 slips, one downwind and a decent one into the wind but with the cover of an Orchard close by. On the first flight he flew well and missed out by a gnats tadger, he came back to the lure nicely from 1/4 mile so pleased. On the second flight he tried to bind upside down with a crow and hit it (and hit another one) but lost them both before they made it to the safety of an Orchard.
No Crows in the bag, but I tell you what firstly it is a real pleasure to fly this bird, secondly Crows dont hang about when they see a fit Falcon that means business and they move very quickly in 40mph/ 65kph winds with one up their back end . We drew a blank but had two great flights, the last one a corker, and the day ended nicely with Big Mark flying his '08 50/50 gyr Saker "Guy" for the 4th time free, attached is a crappy picture (my fault, dodgy camera phone) of Guy managing to stay close to Mark in the high winds.
thanks Mark, a great day out.

Just a quick post after driving the 6 1/4 hour journey back from flying Odin over the weekend with Rob at Ayrshire Taxidermy.
It took us around 8 1/2 hours to drive up on Friday so after an early night we were all fit and ready for flying Odin and Oscar at Crows, and flying Robs 2 B52 Bombers Zena and Geraldine at Gulls, the predicted tally was to be be 1 crow and 2 gulls.
It was Odins turn first and after his perfromance during the week, we were looking for an easy slip. It came after only 10 minutes in the form of a group of 10 Crows 30 yards into a field, so I slipped Odin, off he went and Bang! number 6 in the bag, and just what the Doctor ordered. We let him crop up on the Crow and called it a day.

http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii112/Yorkys_bucket/Image004.jpg
Next was Oscar who after 3 exciting flights failed to land one, but it wasnt for the want of trying and a very impressive effort on his 2nd outing in 6 months. I had a rather interesting run in with a group of 5 shotgun toting locals on Oscars last slip after losing view of him over some woods, they accused me of poaching with a hawk, and lets say it was getting heated....however 'll leave that story for another time, but my thanks to Robs mate Rab for coming quickly when called on the radio and making the numbers a little more balanced.:biglaugh:
We then flew the two B52s which ended with some great slips and a Gull in the Bag, but I'll let Rob tell that story on his thread.
So 1 Crow, 1 Gull, but some great flights and great company.
Odins weight was good today, but it was blowing 60mph gusts and we decided against flying the falcons.
