I just want to order Martin Jones telemetry set, with two transmitters, one for my gos and one for my spar.
Does any of you used MJ Telemetry and what do you think about her?

not the best choice, enquire about the warranty on the transmitters - 90 days I think. They are not the first choice with anyone I know. A decent small transmitter that would suit both the gos and spar is the Merlin systems mini fmv, approx £100 -good range and battery life for size.

Imprint female german gos. Very good season. 25 pheasants, 4 quails and 4 hares and I didn't have dog but I will get one GWP in August this year, and then she will be my perfect girlie.
I fly her at 1,05 kg.
She is in the aviary now, she start to turn her tail to me in January. Now we bouth finished nest. Look in the section Artificial insemenation and incubation.
I hope I will be DAD! He, he!

I have used Martin jones telemetry, and have used his two stage transmitter and still use the micro transmitter for my Spar, The receiver has been back to be repaired once and has to go back again now as it won't pick up any signals, The only thing I would say is that the system is getting a little old now compared to it's rivals, saying that I think for use with shortwings it is more than up to the job.
I now use Marshall and found it to be far superior when I tested both together, and I also fly a peregrine hybrid and wanted the extra power and distance from the marshall transmitters. I am still waiting for the Marshall Micro transmitter though...Hope this helps...nice looking bird to.

I would advise anybody to get the best system they can afford, a receiver that will be able to be used with any hawk, falcon - then get a transmitter suitable for the bird your flying. When people quote suitable for a shortwing - this usually means under ideal circumstances. But when your gos or spar is on a kill under a banking or in a water filled ditch these systems/transmitters will be found lacking - I like to be able to switch on the receiver and know it will pick up a signal and not be looking for high ground or setting off in the last direction without a signal.

1st sytem I got was this in '90 when flying gosses. one morning, new batteries in both transmitter& receiver exercised the Gos on a following on flight / walk that lsted sevral kills and about 4 miles, I finally called her down to me a bout a mile (1.6 km?) from last kill to find she had no trtansmitter. I rtetraced steps even to where she ahd made previous 2 kills & eb=ven then I had no signal. at worst I must have been a max of 25 metres away. since then I hav egone to L&L ( which was stolen with our range rover in'99 & had Marshall since . intially most difcult system to use, but once you get used to it it is the system to use.
Hope this helps J

Hi jastreb,
I use the Martin Jones system and have found it to be excellent, like with all equipment it's a matter of personal opinion as long as it works, does its job and it finds my bird i'm happy with it 8)
Which one are you thinking of ordering the 3 channel receiver or the newer one?

HH

Outflying, I just meant that in my opinion it is a good system and more than adequate for shortwings, it is also ok for long wings, Jim chick who makes the systems hunts rooks on the Salisbury plain and has no problems locating his Peregrines on a kill after a long slip, Maybe he knows how best to use the system, after all he made it....Just my views.

Don't know who makes the Martin Jones system but I'll bet a pound to an acorn it isn't MJ!<g>
I did a lot of research and ended up with Biotrack. What sold me initially was that the company was form by privatising part of Oxford University biology department. Next that they manufacture more transmitters than anyone else in Europe and don't push their products through excessive advertising. Did I read somewhere that they have built over 50,000 transmitters so far? Watch any TV program where they are following big cats or whatever for filming and they all have Biotrack equipment.
It is not the range that you should be worried about but reliability, in my opinion. I have heard of far too many cases of Marshall's failing. Also, the service and back up is poor. Biotrack will usually turn around their products in under a week.
Biotrack does not look pretty, but it is practical. I drove over the yaggi with the quad and had a tangle! Up and running again in a couple of hours. Just replaced the plastic tube from the local plumbers' merchant and bent the aluminium arms back into shape. Never let me down yet after four years.
One year I found the transmitter was not working properly. Sent it back to Biotrack who pointed out that I had only put one battery in it! However, they tested everything anyway and return it to me within days with two fresh batteries, working correctly of course. No charge.
Go to www.biotrack.co.uk. They also make micro transmitters suitable for small accipiters which are glued to a single feather and last for months. The range is not great but adequate for a spar or gos.

Usually if someone has confidence in their products- they will offer a good warranty period. Martin Jones offers 90 days, I wouldn't think this is a suitable length of time.

Like I said I think compared to the competitors MJ is a bit out of date with his product now, I would expect atleast a year with a tranny and receiver.
Also alot of the MJ stuff is ex stock but sold as new!!!! my mini tranny was new price but it wasn't brand new, Also because Jim chick makes all the gear the stuff is limited and no real testing for new products is done, the service is good though and Jim is helpful, There are better units about though and all offering good warranties and after sales service.

i had the m/j system....and it served me well........however now i have tha marshall i find it more compact...and i hav'nt lost my birds yet so (touch wood)...i spose they both do the job.
i do think also however if you get the marshal of the user selling them via this forum they work out cheeper than the m/j system

Salisbury Plain - isn't that flat ? No problem with anyones opinion as I'm basing my answers on my own experiences also. Even using an Rt+, sometimes it has been difficult to locate the gos in certain situations. I'm located in Lancashire, loads of hills making tracking a little testing.

I have found the system very reliable, it's worth bearing in mind that like cars benefit from a service so does telemetry, whatever the make.
In my opinion I prefer to use a UK system because if anything does go wrong you haven't the prob's of sending it back abroad and having to wait weeks for it's return.

It might be interesting to have a word with Trading Standards/Consumer Protection about consumer rights and electrical goods. I think they are meant to last a lot longer than 90 days. Some of these guarantees are there to stop people complaining when things go wrong. But I may be mistaken. Would anyone but an electric drill that was expected to break down in 91 days?

What part of a sealed unit will you service (transmitter) ? Receiver yes, transmitter no.

There are checks that can be done on the transmitter to see if it's working fine.

Agreed Goldie,
I've had superb service off Garlands and Marshalls. A friend whose micro tx played up after 3 seasons got his money back - due to the fact the new one wasn't available. Money now waiting to buy the new model when it arrives.

Sure was, that was what Garlands recommended, they swapped it out and the new one is fine.

I think the alarm level was set too high, most of them seem that way.
