Everyone always bangs on about superior harrises.
Q. I she a superior?
A. I dunnow, Is yours?
A I dunnow!
got me thinking, never mind the largest, Whats the smallest Harris anyone has encountered.
I had a male that came into yarak at 1lb 2oz (needles to say he was a feather bird)
What about you :?:

Yep and he's sold his bigger female in preferance!
Chris Neal used to have a male that flew at 15oz? he was tiny and i think called titch?
I have 3 breeding pairs, they throw young that range from 2lb 10oz flying weight females to my smallest pair who's females fly at 1lb12-1lb 14, who's Hawka came from, i have a waiting list for both males and females from my smallest pair, havent taken any orders for the big ones this year yet?
Think that says it all!
Dont knock em til you've tried em

Titch, Of course.
I forgot all about titch, Flown him loads of times in Hagley woods with Chris Neal and Dave Squires.
I think he was one of chris's US imports but not sure.
Long time ago that innit!.

We have a male harris that fly's at 1lb 5. he's super for displays, nifty and always wanting to please. He's great for displays, which is what he does, as he is so light, most people can handle him and arnt scared of him. He's very friendly and gets on with everyone! Will try and ge a pic when he next comes down, at the mo, he's being flown by a 6yo!
I like all harris's, big an small. But it does come down to the temperment, both the 2lb 8 female and the 1lb 5 male, have the same, laid back temperment and willing to please.

I love my little male...all 1lb 5 ounze of him....he has taken a 5lb 2 0z buck rabbit and cock pheasants up to 4 1/2lb. I wanted a big old female but accidentally got a male....annoyed for about 2 weeks then BAM. Learnt to keep my brain bias free pretty quickly after that.

Man alive  Thats a good little male, My male couldn't hold a rabbit to save his life. Even by the head.
He came into his own at crows and rooks though, he would take them on at almost any distance, Flying an indirect or direct attack-whatever he thought was appropriate for the terrain.

He got some help from a branch that stopped him being dragged too far away. He was seriously ruffled and spent a couple of days recovering though. :D :D :D We weighed the rabbit on my Salter scales. 8) 8) 8)

i know your talking about small harris hawks, but i ,m flying a male redtail and most people think that male reds are in the 2lb + weight bracket but mines hunting at 1lb 14oz and took a 5lb brown hare this year and many cock PH,the biggest one was just over 4lbs, so your hawk doesnt need to be the biggest bird you can find or get your hands on.
cheers jase.

I think that the male red tail is one of the most underated birds used in UK falconry.
Get em fit and they are dynamite, I mean just look what the yanks do with em.
I think most folk get a Harris cos they think a red tail is just a step up from a common buzard, shame realy cos they are so versatile.

I love the look of the redtail....awesome...but I got my harris because they are like little rowdy football hooligans...all bouncy, voice driven killers...as for the male/female divide WE ALL KNOW BOYS ARE BETTER THAN GIRLS EH :D :D :D

but big male small female seems best, but whats the biggest male? and are females more agressive?
I think titch has won the prize for the smallest already

I flew a male Bred my John Shaw in Derbyshire in 1985 that flew and took rabbits daily at 1lb 15 1/2 oz, had him sexed and he eventually went on to breed.
His sister flew at 2lb 14 and mom was a 3lb HH??
Still prefer the small females or big Males, my boys are flying around 1lb 8oz at the end of their first season.
Although i can fly them right up to 1lb 10, they work daily with clients and dog at 1lb 8, they are not big! just in routine and very relaxed.

Well my little MHH flies at 1lb 5oz and today he nailed 2 good sized rabbits beautiful flights between 40 and 50 yards through woodland he got them with 1 foot on the back of the neck and 1 foot on top of the head neither moved much once he latched on to them he's a cracker and i was told he would'nt be able to hold big rabbits on his own ( what a load of twaddle ) .....R'gards Rob.

Now that really is impressive Paul, i take my hat off to that guy!
I managed it once this year with a 1lb 6oz eyass male (but it was only a 6 1/2 lb Hare)
His male must be mentally Fit to achieve that three times, takes a lot outta a little guy, which is why it earnes much more respect than the 2lb 10 oz females!
My boys are piling on the ounces now and are flying at just under 1lb 9oz, but god are they like barrels!
Yesterday, three points, three rabbits, no problemo!
Why has life got to be difficult? give me a male HH anyday

I mainly dog rabbits here in sunny Scotland, plus i havent seen any mittens this year yet?
As i have to hunt every day anyway right thru the year, i try to fly off established points!
But i do this as a commercaial and i use 1000's of acres of ground to avoid over predation!

That's ok Varmint, hunting wouldn't deplete the population much around here either, its just you can't use a ferret because of babes in the hole and the only rabbits that hang around above ground long enough for a point at the moment are little things with dummies playing heee !!

I have all on to see one adult rabbit let alone a baby so think yourself lucky!
