Her name is Ra. She was caught last Thursday in pheasant aviary. I put her up on 1 kg, and flew her today morning on 904 grams. I will put her in condition and releas her.
I noticed she don't like cats-like pets, but she wants to eat them!

nice, is it legal to keep wild caught birds in your country? if so, why not keep her for a season before releasing her?

No it is not legal to keep them for falconry. I am one of the major man in Raptor Rescue Team in Croatia, and also member of ornithologyst union, so I just have chance to take caught, starved or injured birds, try to help them, put them back in condition, put the ornitologyst ring on and release.
But I am very happy because of that, one month of benefit to fly wilde hagard gos!

Nice one mate, you lucky sod! It amazes me how steady you can get Passage and haggard birds, much more so that eyass's which just strengthens the belief that most of the inner fears and insecurities we experience in manning captive bred raptors, we instill ourselves!

Well said Varmint, although my 1st Gos( early 70's, haggard, german female) was pretty wild... wild she was furious! no seriously she took an age manning her down, having said that she was eventually bomb proof

A very beautiful gos!
One thing I think the forum should be warned about is long leather jesses. Below is a picture I took of a goshawk (ringed red) that had got one of its jesses wrapped around a branch at the top of a pine tree. Note the falconer at bottom right for scale. Fortunately, someone managed to borrow a ladder from a local builder and this incident ended happily. I have seen far too many hawks caught up in this way -- and very few, as it happens, by the slit at the end of the jess if it is wetted and rolled before the hawk is slipped. (Aymeris are over-rated).
I'd rather upset someone by mentioning this than see another hawk snagged in this way. Just soak a strip of leather in water, then wrap it round a branch and judge for yourself.

These are not hunting jesses, when I start to fly her free, she will be without jesses. Only part of alymery around the leg, I had once that kind of accidence and it is not good to call firemans! :x

Jack, It should be mentioned that under no circumstances should a bird be flown with slitted jesses. I change the jesses out to ones with very small holes in them to aviod getting snagged.

Yup been there too many times, wore the t-shirt and climbed the tree!
Fly them naked I say, the only problem is some birds are on the bot to be trusted side for that, but then I even flew my Gos naked last season.

I thought i was safe using real short flying jess, but still had my bird come back one day with both deck feathers of a very large cock pheasant securely knoted into the end of one of them. Lucky pheasants throw their feathers or he could have been dragged for miles

I discussed Aymeris with a very experienced falconer recently. (Over 70 years old and probably one of Britain's most experienced game hawkers). He uses ordinary short slitted jesses for flying, wetting the ends and twisting them between finger and thumb. His comment was, "Why put on an anklet with a bloody great 1/4 inch diameter hole in it when you can close a very much smaller slit at the end? I knew Guy Aylmer and he was quite mad anyway".
Let me hasten to add, that I don't subscribe to this practice but I think he has a point. I use short flying jesses made from chain saw starter cord (stiff but pliable) with small split rings at their end. I run a cord through the rings so I can slip quickly. Can't think of any twig small enough to go through the rings that a gos couldn't break. OK, so there's barbed wire -- but that is a very small hazard where I fly. I use pop jesses on a spar so fly the bird naked.

I think you may have missed the point. The gos up the tree in the photo got snagged by a wet leather jess getting wrapped around a branch -- it was a slitless jess.
I have NEVER seen a hawk caught up by the slit in the jess. But I have seen several caught by a wet over-long leather jess getting wrapped around a branch -- as in this case. Also, I don't think I have ever read of this problem (i.e. long leather jesses getting wrapped around a branch, whether slitted or not)!

I dont use any grease on the ends of Jesters flying jesses so they are fairly stiff anyway. Is this the right thing to do????

That's what i tend to do, although of course mainly flying gamehawks, I shouldn't have this problem in the 1st place!

I don't ever grease flying jesses, I wet them then dry them on the radiator or something. I want them to be as short and stiff as possible. Greasing them will prevent them ever becoming stiff and more likely harder to keep hold of them when on the glove.
Outflying.
ps why are you greasing them ?

UMMMMMMMMM im greasing the top couple of inches to keep them a bit supple.
I did try shorter ones but he doesnt sit very well with them unless he has enough slack to lift his feet a little so i made some about 7" long which gives me enough to hold on to and him enough to have some slack

That's why i don't use grease, I don't want the flying jesses to be supple. You can cut them thinner, leaving the top section a bit wider to make a tight fit in the eyelet - the last thing I want is a supple flying jess. Can't see the point in greasing flying jesses
