Ok folks,is there any reasons why you should build your own mews or has anyone ever converted a big enough garden shed/summer house into a mews/weathering.My theory is that if i buy a shed(there are several companies selling sheds flat packed, delivered and erected for 200 quid!!)That price is for an 8'x6'.It would cost me more to buy the materials and build myself.Just after your views !?

Griif this looks pretty cool, however if anyone has the great bulk that I do I would not be able to get into that samll door in the weathering section, also did you cut the onduline( corrugated roofing material) ion the end that over hangs the end of the weathering, If so how did you trim it ( I nee dto cut down some onduline I am usiong at the mo but not sure weather to saw / cut w stanley knife etc. Re the thread can't see waht shed looks like , but weathering looks preety good

J
Dude, get yourself to your diy stores, wickses,b&q etc, this time of year they are getting new "show" sheds up and removing the old ones,or storing um "out the back"get talking,i have bought a 8x6 and a 7x4 for £5 a panel,(£35 a shed)on 2 occasions, and got me mate 2 8x6"s for the same money, negotiate dude :!: ..and dont be shy

Hi J
If you look at the door on the weathering it has three silver hinges....I dont use the small door ....but the whole panel :) I have not cut the roofing material...just overlapped onto shed and left overhang to take water away from weathering area. Will take some more pics of the shed and interior tomorrow.... its a neat set up in there.... 7ft by 5ft ..... plenty of room for Lanner falcon.

Hi
Here is the inside of the Mews shed...as promised. I put pond liner under the shelf perch to catch all the mewts....overnight ....and then clean outside in the morning. Found this to be very effective...once a week i will spray with anti bacterial/fungal agent (the inside of the shed) cleanliness is essential.

One question how do you clean and disinfect all of that fake grass properly? oh, and what about the winter when its minus temps?? take it the bird is tethered constantly when not in the field
GriffMJ
21-03-2005, 10:06 PM
This year the mews area outside will be extended for free lofting, the outside cage can be unscrewed from the main shed for extension. The lanner is flown every day and tethered .....this year free lofting is essential during the moult and rest period.
The astro turf on the shelf is unscrewed and then pressure washed with agent.

Very smart set up, they look like the aviary panels you can buy, they are cheaper than making them yourself... When you free loft what do you do?? I am trying 'netlon' inside the wire as I cant afford bars this year, and have run out of building time!!

like the idea about b+q but they do tend to be made virtualy out of paper nowerdays if you can find one there is a few places that sell reclaimed wood. I have found them very useful in the past and your money will get you much thicker wood which will make you a far stronger shed, mews etc hope this is of some help all the best KEV.

Hey Mikey,
I just happen to be reading this so how about a fly this weekend, say Sat pm if you can make it give Paul a shout and weather permitting we could do it!
If I get it right there should be a piccy of my Mews for you to see and I'm in the process at the moment of building a second one to the right hand side of it as well, the thing about building off a shed is that if you make a doorway into the mews from inside the shed you have your safety door built in.
Roll on Saturday.
Albie..
All proper t&g Kev, :!: wouldnt touch otherwise

in my experience you can get anything you need t&g, sheets of ply, spars, reclaimed windows even roofing material. At a fraction of the cost of going out and buying a good sized half descent quality shed.all the best KEV.

Hi Colin,
Sorry to keep you waiting for this, and this is a picture of my new Extended mews to house two different birds!
I started off on the first mews with an 8 foot by 6 foot garden shed.
I made up a concrete base 10x7 to stand the shed long ways on, and in the shed when you walk in the door on the left I cut out an opening to take a 2'3" wide stable door (home made) this acts as a safety door when the main shed door is closed.
See one of my old posts 12'long 10'deep 8'6" high.
My new extended mews is now either side of the original shed as above except that we moved the shed into the original mews to the left to make the two mews seen in the picture below .
The new sizes are, the original mews to the left is now 10' long 10' deep 8'6" high, and the new mews to the right is 8'long 10' deep 8'6" high with a stable door on the right as you walk in.
The reason for making these internal doors Stable doors is when you open the top half my birds are trained to come sit on the lower half then hop up to the fist.(one at a time of course!!)
I will post some pics of the inside of shed and the flights if this is a help to you.
Cheers for now ,
Albie..

Albie what does the sign on the door say? Ellie! Keep OUT?
Albie
23-04-2005, 07:15 PM
Hi Paul,
Ellie has just read your comments about the sign, and asked me to let you know Your "crusin for a brusin" or words to that effect.
I was just out taking a couple of pics of the flights inside the mews.
See below this should make you smile, check out the new tiles, for easy cleaning..
Albie..
i'm glad i'm not the only one to have put tiles down!! I have put sand over my tiles but it is so much easier to keep clean.
that is really nice and tidy.
Albie
23-04-2005, 08:00 PM
Hi Bubo,
Yes the tiles are easier to clean, and more so with a Harris Hawk like my Nimbus.
Thats why I tile the wall right behind where he roosts, cause some of what he sticks on that wall you could use as an alternative to concrete LOL
Albie..

I'd love to have something open fronted like that for a hawk, but facing the atlantic and only having a few fields between us and the atlantic and lots of gale force winds, I think i could be free flying a hawk long before I want too!

Thanks Nimbus, That should help alot.
As I don't own my house has anyone got any suggestions as to what I can put as a base. I am not allowed to put a concrete base down. Would the grass be ok with pea shingle on top.
