This is my new female peregrine 'Orca'.
She was acquired for a breeding project but Ill try and slay some ducks with her first.
Ive been after some of this bloodline for years so its a relief to finally obtain her for our little breeding project.
Im off work soon to do some some dogging for some grousehawking friends so it will be nice to spend some time getting her ready for the duck opener.

Wow! She's so dark she looks like a hybrid. Is she pure peregrinus or is she another sub species?

looks like a peales to me but don't quote me on that. i know that there is a lot of mixing possible but that bird has the peales look to it, but i have only seen several dozen peales in my life..

She's a pure peales, mostly Aleutian blood.
She's a grand daughter of Sullivan's 'Black Girl'.
Ive waited years for a youngster out of that pair. We got a full brother too and that is being flown by a friend. The hope in the end is to have a couple of unrelated pairs.

Hi Dave,
She was 2lb 10 out of the aviary apparently but she didn't feel too fat.
Id say she'll fly in the 2'3 -2'4 range. who knows, who cares.
The important thing for me is her bloodline and her looks, to be honest I didn't think they made them like her anymore.
She has a monkey-eating beak and whomping great yellow feet. Interestingly I put her next to a friends new female peales and they looked fairly similar apart from the fact that his had blue feet and this one had yellow. They had the same diet except his is more Queen Charlotte blooded than mine which is heavier on the Aluetian side.

Too be honest Jim I live in fear of that beak though she seems to have a sweet temperment.
She was totally hatched and raised by the parents in seclusion so hopefully she is well adjusted for future breeding.
She,s a ****in stunner, shortish wings when out-stretched and one hell of a tail!!!!!!!Ive heard rumours now I will find out!

NickNick she looks like the real deal apart from she maybe a bit on the small side for a peales don't you think? and her lack of blue feet, I thought they were a characteristic of the Aleutian peales....but she's a looker for sure and a nice hawk for anyone to get over their broken toy's with. I hope she is all you wish for and she fills that empty void for you.
Sam
One very beautiful dark falcon.

Going by photographic evidence and not first hand experience, young peales feet vary from deep yellow to blue, just like our British birds.

Something i've noticed is that the deck feathers of CDT's peales has no barring at all and the other tail feathers have barring only on one side of the quill. Which is exactly the same as some of my birds.
Photo of one of this years young, unfortunately i've not got a photo of the tail:

The pure Aleutians Ive seen had yellow feet and the Yanks tell me they can be any colour. Look at Clayton Whites book for Aleutians, it will tell you everything you need to know.
She's just big enough for the ducks Im going to fly, in fact she's a pound in weight overkill Id say.
I must have had a bang on the head to outsource a perfectly decent peales tiercel to fly the diesel version!
But she will lay eggs.........

Is this one that you have bred or one of CDT's ?
I have bred a falcon this year with a tail as you describe. I am looking for a quallity tiercel to pair with her.

the yellow feet thing is a bit offsetting. i have had a fair number of peales and have seen a bunch both captive bred and wild taken and can say that the number of certifiable female peales that i have seen with yellow feet in the first year is very near zero. i say very near because i have a second year tiercel (at least possibly, half related to the bird in the picture) that had yellow feet as a youngster. i was a little offset by this since i have seen yellow feet a bunch in anatums but i do not recall ever seeing yellow feet in a wild immature peales--even passage birds. yellow feet has a lot to do with diet but even so i find it interesting to say the least. the young falcon in the pics look every bit a peales (and a handsome one at that)but the foot color is odd. the other thing that is interesting is the oddly short wings seen in the picture. it may only be a pictorial phenomena but all the actual Aleutian peales that i have seen or handled had very long, almost seagull like wings. There were some "Aleutian" peales that came from Fidel D. that had freak short wings, these birds were very dark birds and became part of the breeding pool in some of the peales breeding programs in the US. i would suspect that the short wings that would appear in the picture are most likely not representative of the actual bird but rather just a problem with the picture.

Hi Jim,
Her genetics are Sullivan on the tiercel side and Sullivan, Geiger and Fidele on the female side.
You'd know more than me on these lines.
Ive seen pics of two wild taken Aleutians and they both had yellow feet and I had a tiercel from Sullivans more QC blood that had blue feet..
The short wings thing is just the angle of the shot. Ill take some more today.

the gray wash is pretty cool. my older tiercel peales (Weidner breeding) has a pretty heavy gray wash. it sort of looks like he has soot all over his chest feathers. my younger tiercel peales (second season) is part Sullivan part Hunter breeding, as i recall, this produces some very dark peales and as i mentioned has yellow feet at hard penning. he also has very long wings and has short tarsus which gives him a very compact "squatty" look though he is not fly as big as my weidner bird, 650 grams hunting weight as apposed to 730+ for the weidner bird. my 4 year old peales falcon barely has yellow feet and did not achieve that until she was two years old they look rather anemic when see her standing next to her mate who has feet the color of an orange. anyhow it looks like you have all the bird you need to have a bit of fun this fall, good luck with her.

Jim,
She isn't a pure Aleutian as she has some QC blood in her.
Her wings are longer and with longer secondaries than a peregrinus of the same size. It clears the leaves off the lawn when she pumps them!
She's she'll be loose in the next day or two. She's pulling the block out of the ground for a swung dead quail.

stunning peales mate was hoping to get a falcon next year but was put off by a couple of people cause they said they have a really bad tempers. could this this be down to the odd bird or are the peales jenerally bad tempered.
would of been flying her at rooks and mostly gulls.

I haven't seen the bad temper thing yet but this is only my second peales.
The tiercel I had was very placid with me, but very aggressive on game.
So far this falcon is very gentle and quiet too.
I was hoping to fly her fly her loose tonight but the wind and rain put a stop to that.
Peales are renowned as being very fast so ought to do well on the pursuit flights.
My friend in Sussex has just got a female for rooks on the downs. She's as tame as social imprint and not nasty either, though I don't doubt there are nasty peales out there or other types of peregrines too.

This peales made its first flight to the kite bait tonight.
Its the first time she's seen either the kite or the bait hanging there but she just charged in and bound to it.
I left her on the creance just to make sure but put a transmitter on her just in case of accidents!
Tomorrow she'll go loose to it all being well and the we get some wind.
It when she opens her wings and flies that you see how much wing the peales have.
Attached some pics.
The hill behind is where we hope to catch some winter grouse later on in the season.
The heather is in blossom this year and is showing very pink though itsnot really visible on these phone pics.
The kite fell out of the sky in the end and nearly hit us but she didn't even bat an eyelid.
She's a pleasure to train.
Nick
She looks heavily armed Nick, hope she,s all you wish her to be!!!:supz:
