cock capercaillie's dean took 341.5 last season all from 30 000ft verticles my tiercels 1lb 2.436oz all killed out right with head shots.
what we do is cut all the forest down so theyve got nowere to go then put the tiercel up, small tiercels are better because they hit alot harder.
he was introduced to his game by accident, I was flying him off the fist at wrens when a capper broke 600 yrds ahead from behind a small rock the tiercel shot off went up to around 20,000ft cartweeled over and dropped corkscrewing all the way he hit it five times removing both wings, legs and head with each shot before it hit the floor dead! i gave him a skinned deboned chick wing as a good reward and carried on after more wrens.ill sort the pictures out later.

Mallard duck, he took quite a few grouse latter on in life , and he killed a cock pheasant at a field meet in cambridge one time, about 10 years ago now, southeast club, [tilbury] i started him putting him of high slopes , and serving him when he was well out of position , flushing patridge , and pigeon , that got his attention , in the end the longer i left him the higher he went, he was started at 1.6 oz, and would fly up to about 1.7 1/2 ,mark.

i guess i will chime in on this. most tiercel peregrines will take cock pheasants though some will quit them after a few years. the best " big game" tiercel peregrine i have had is my current tiercel peales. he catches piles of ducks of any size that gets up and took 14 winter sage grouse in his best season on them, many being cock birds which can go to 7 pounds and take some stopping. He had a long wild hack and usually can only be seen with binoculars when he is waiting on(something i actually find a bit annoying really). no balloons, kites airplanes, rockets or similar were used to get him to fly high-- he does it by nature.

Mark, have you tried other tiercels since or before him at mallard, you see I just cant get my head arount it! Everybody seems to have had their tiercels take mallard,I have made one up to yet,out of several! Many showing no interest at all in,bananas of no use at all!

The only male Peregrine that I've flown is the imprint Anatum that I'm flying now. I usually fly him at 21 oz. He has killed game when he weighed as much as 24 oz., but he won't always come to the lure at that weight.
I started him with a tame hack, then hunted quail because the partridge population was down where i usually hunt. The quail certainly didn't help his pitch any. The next year, the partridge were back and he started to go up pretty well. When he was killing partridge regularly, I flew him at hen pheasants and ducks. He killed the first hen pheasant I flew him at with a head shot. I avoided rooster pheasants, and for a long time I avoided Mallards because he would hit them too hard and bruise himself.
He has finally learned to use some finesse and I can fly him at Mallards again. He has killed drakes up to 50 oz. I used him for bird control at an air force base for two years but hunted with him also during that time. I usually flush when he is in the 600 to 1,000 foot range, but if I wait, he will often go up out of sight. I have missed seeing the stoop and kill a few times when he was up out of sight because he killed something that I didn't see flush.
Now that he has learned that he is not really Superman, his main fault is that once in a while he will sit on a fence post or the truck for a bit before taking a pitch.

What is the largest quarry any of you have taken with tiercel peregrines regularly? What weight was your tiercel? How was he introduced to his game?I have killed hen pheasants and a few cock pheasants with tiercel peregrines and all three of the tiercels i have flown have killed mallard, two of them with some regularity though not daily but at that time i didn't look on duck as my main quarry, partridge hawking was my fix in the early 90's.

Dean here is a photo of my Tiercel 'Ike' on a 3lb 6oz Lincolnshire Drake Mallard from the last Woodhall.
If I weighed him like everyone else (ie hood & swivel attached) he would weigh 1lb 7oz+
He will fly drake mallards & cock pheasants all day long
Cheers

Dean,
You know what I think of tiercels .
Ive had four that took ducks and two that took lots.
They both flew in the 1'4-1'5 range so very average.
Both were flown and managed as duckhawks, not as gamehawks and took big ducks like they were shelling peas.
Your tiercel may not kill many in his first season, but if you keep him beyond the moult you'll reap the whirlwind!!!
The first pic is a good weekend's work with Zulu.
The second is of Pacman, he's still on the go, flying for Darren Chillton in Dumfries.

Dave,I have had orange foot before due to impact on mallard,it does concern me,yet it seems that most of my tiercels have,nt showed interest in larger quarry, even as inexperienced eyas,s!!I am missing something, yet to put my finger on???If you have any input I do need it!!!

I take it youve got a tiercel for mallards deano??,caught a few with mine when the occasional opportunity to fly them has occured as you know and seen, only had one real decent kill on mallard worth remembering and that was from a lowish pitch down wind flush,he killed it stone dead a big drake too,all the others looked easy even choosing drakes out of mixed groups of smaller teal/widgeon only thing that was hard about them was keeping hold of them on the deck and not getting wing wipped but my tiercel tends to bind alot he's got a pussy punch under normal conditions.if his wieghts top end he's choosy or wont bother if he's sharper he'll have a dig.small ducks and wild greys give him the best challenge and he does well on these from good pitches.would like to see a tiercel flown on them almost exclusivly thats a wacker rather than binds,it must be some bird alltho not something id want to do.

It was the same as usual with that tiercel. He had both feet in the head and neck and the drake wasn't going anywhere.
The only foot problems Ive had with tiercels were on partridges where they seem to hit them with everything they've got.
The head/neck shots on ducks seem to be more measured and with less risk.
If a tiercel was binding all the time there might be more risk, but then most tiercels Ive seen are whackers.
If I was just flying mallard only Id plump for the biggest tiercel I could find or a female, but who flys mallard only (apart from yourself)?. On mixed ducks including teal, divers, wigeon and mallard the tiercel is one hell of a tool.
If I had didn't have this female peales for breeding Id be flying another no question.

This is my 21 oz Anatum, Oscar, with a 50 oz Mallard he caught last fall, his 5th season. He hit the drake just hard enough to knock it down, then bound to it's neck when it tried to fly. There was a big scuffle but the drake couldn't drag Oscar with Oscar bound to his neck. You can see the covert that Oscar lost in the scuffle at the upper left.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r50/chamokane/Oscarsdrake.jpg
A few days earlier, he hit a 49 oz drake but it just kept flying. Then, he bound to it but it took him for a ride. When Oscar let go, the drake dove back into the pond. I came back a few hours later and flew the female Anatum at the drake and she killed it in the stoop.

These are among the largest ducks that I've caught here, but I get the impression that they may get bigger in England. How big are the larger Mallards that you guys catch there?

Some of the hits Iv'e had on greenheads with my falcons have made me cringe and one or two that have curled back on big water and been dropped close to the waters edge have just been to out of it to get back into the drink even though thay have been only a few feet from water and safety.

Chamokane,
Since I started hawking ducks (solely with tiercels) Ive weighed nearly everyone as well as all the ones that we shoot every year.
The average drake mallard in winter here is about 2'8 or 40 ounces, and hens about 2'2. The biggest drake and hen Ive caught were 3'4 and 2'10 respectively. The drake was huge and fat, the hen was just very fat with good winter feeding.
Ive an immature drake goldeneye in the freezer that weighs 2'8 and ive seen some drake goldeneye up in Northern Scotland that must have been 3 pounders. They were like tanks. Unfortunately they were on a massive loch system that we couldn't shift them off long enough for the tiercel to execute one.
