Anyone ever use a Weim for falconry? We got a bitch that my husband is training as a gun dog and I was just wondering how hard it would be to take her out with a bird instead of a gun if I can ever get started in falconry.

As with any dog, there are a percentage that can do it, and a percentage that can't.

There are plenty of people on here better qualified to tell you about dogs than me.
One thing I do know is, every one I have seen loves to eat/destroy things they shouldnt.
I went out hawking with a friend, he left his dog in a proper dog cage for 20 minutes in the car. We came back, the dog had bent open the door and totally destroyed the inside of his car, Seats, carpet, head lining, steering wheel, gear stick, hand brake........you name it, it was wrecked.......
FUNNIEST THING I EVER SAW IN MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!

i had a weim a few years ago great with th hawk but would only listen to me not my missus who at the time was 6 months pregnant .. it takes them a good 2 years to settle down cause they are super hyper as you probebly know by now... but train the dog first then eventully get the bird the only other problem when using gun dogs you dont want them to retreive your bird and the bunny etc...good luck

She (weimer) should do fine with hawks. Your passage RT, assuming that will be your first bird, may not like dogs, tho. The better the obedience training, the better chances of having two naive animals working together with less fear of a disastrous begining. Weimers aren't the first choice for hardcore field trial enthusiastss, but for dirt hawking ... hey why not. If you expect her to learn both gun hunting for upland game and hawking for bunnies, then you must have a lot of patience for her to become a solid all-around dog. The big test when switching will be is how she reacts to the hawk on game....especially after being allowed to retrieve during gun hunting. But why not give a weimer a chance to work in the field... most never do.

Yeah thats sounds about right. I don't want to get started on how much stuff we've lost to this dog. Luckily most of it belonged to my hubby since he hasn't figured out after numerous foster dogs that you have to keep your **** out of reach. lol Poor guy.

Thanks guys. Hopefully by the time I actually get my first bird (I don't know what it'll be) she will be well seasoned and out of the puppy stage. She's doing great under the gun with hubby so we'll see. I know I'll have to try it once at least.

Hawkman69- She's kind of that way too. But she listen to me great as long as hubby isn't in sight. Actually, she used to do better with me cause she didn't feel the need to stick like glue to my side. I think he's gotten her broke of that now though.
