False is too much hassle but some birds have to have them.
Rather get one of those eyelet closers so you can do it on your own.

Are you "Billy no mates" , only joking. Isn't there anyone at all who can hold the hawk in a towel for you to use the traditional closing tool. If you get the plier type closing tool, it is possible to change the anklets without casting. Just change them when the hawk is feeding on a carcass on the floor.

Definetely go for the real deal , whole reason of not having a 'mews jess slit ' is its safer , but thats assuming the bird is free lofted , if the bird is tethered then makes no odds

It doesn't need to be a falconer to hold the bird in a towel, but if you don't think anyone can help you try the plier type and change them whilst the hawk is feeding. I did it with my imprint gos no problem.

Guys this is another good reason why you should go put up a thread in this section:
http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=180
To say where you are from, so that we can all help each other out in times of need.
So come on lets see Lanarkshire up there!

Jay you have mentioned on several occaisions now that you have 40 year experience. Is this when you were first introduced or actually trained a bird?

Hi Hawkmaster, depends on how you define flaconry? if you define it as having your first hawk tthat actually caught serious amounts of quarry, then No, that was in '72 when I got a wild haggard German F Gos (after various birds including the lanner mentioned in a different thread)but I had my 1st kestrel(autumn '64) that we picked up by the roadside (injured wing that me and my father self repaired with splint & elastoplast) took over six mionths to get him flying , eventully flew to the lure although unfortunately in his 3.5 yrs with me he never managed to hover again soon after his deathe I went on a falconry course ( 3 weeks at Philip Glasiers newly opened Falconry Centre in 1968)
hope this makes sense

Sorry meant to mmention that time spent involved in any activity does not neccessarily mean excellence , although that is what should be strived for. When as a child I learnt to ride the internationally renowned instructor that taught me made me aware that her mother whilst having been around horses, rode them etc etc , for nearly 50 yrs , did not know one end fromn the other so to speak
