Are corvids a realistic quarry for a FIT female harris ??
I know the males are capable but does the female lack to much speed?
Have any of you taken corvids regularly with this bird?
Cheers

I yhave flown a large male ( 1lb 12 ozs) regularly ar rook, occasionaly carrion crow, magpie, jay & jackdaw. One thing you'll need to get your twelemtry sortd out sharpish if you do, I hav ehad flights last nearly 4 miles!!!!

Rooks are easy, the crows will be very difficult. You will need to be very close to most corvids for the slip to be successful.

I'll second that outflying

Also if you fly the same area too often, so will get nowhere near them after a short period of time.

yup, they'll also recognise your vehicle.crafty ******s + you have to constantly try and forward guess them the whole time

i think they should be, my hawk was getting harassed and started chasing them, i was very impressed. She tried getting ontop of one but it was very agile and had friends. In the right circumstances theres no reason why a fit hawk shouldn't be more than capable. However, getting over the psychological problem of being mobbed would be the biggest problem.

The biggest problem is getting close enough.

I found doing my male HH out of the sunroof worked well.

ColdZero

close enough? i couldn't scare the ******s away! they were fearless when they wanted to attack my hawk, holding a stick helped keep them away as they probably thought it was a gun.

Yes, but wait until you try to catch one. They know the difference between a hawk out hunting and a hawk out hunting crows

thanks for your replys-
yes i probably would be slipping her out of the sun roof of a car-annd with her being a pretty big harris she isnt very agile as soon so it will pay of to get close to them.
At the end of last season she almost caught a few but they always seemed to jynx her at the last second
Hopefully she will wisen up to there ticks and tacticks:?:

wasn't there a harris hawking video with corvid hunting from cars for sale on eBay. I think it is supposed to be something similar to Urban Goshawking but with harris hawks. Has anyone seen this video featuring harris hawks ?

Hi,

I have seen the said video, to be honest the flights are no more than a couple of seconds at best.

Plus I don't think it shows falconry in a good light but that's just my opinion.

Its a good DVD, the music is a bit rank but there's some good kills. Its a bit rough and ready and some of the purists among us would probably burn it! lol!!

ive got and seen both (urban goshawk and street hawking)...

i would echo everything harris hawker has said about them (not falconry).

but i do think they are one of them you have to see and make your own minds up

Kev, what flights do you object to in the urban goshawking video, yes the close up stuff with the prey not getting up off the ground ain't the most sporting flight but the long slips at crows out in the fields is as much falconry as any else out there.

now northumberland crow falcons is a different kettle of fish...its a bit dated now i think, but there are some amazing flights @ corvids and starlings.
and spitfire the peri x nz falcon was awesome

mmmmmm now theres a question...to me falconry it about getting out with my birds on beautiful days ( and not so bute)...enjoying the surroundings , hunting with the hawks and generaly escaping from everthing town has to offer.
to me and once again its only my own opinion, the hawking in the dvds dont offer me anything that i would be looking for in falconry.

To fly a shortwing at corvids without a vehicle is quite difficult, the beauty of it (or lack of it) is that when your normal hawking ground is not possible / or its raining, you can still manage to get a flight - maintaining your birds fitness and confidence. Some of the flights at crows are of the highest order.

Kevin Massey

suppose its each to there own....i just couldn't go catching crows in some ones front garden, or a petrol station forecourt. to give my bird exercise

no neither would I, but you can always drive to the countryside, and fly on land you have permission on,

You never answered it first time round, as I pointed out the close up stuff was poor but the long slips at crows in the fields is as much falconry as anything out there in my opinion.

I watched the street hawking today, was pretty good, enjoyed the missed flights more than the catches though. and most of the misses, the hawks just gave up very quicly and waited for teh glove.

i was more shocked when the hawk went infront of the 4 x 4...i could,nt subject a hawk of mine to that.

I saw this topic and thought "This should be interesting" but it is mainly posts about what people THINK a HH might achieve.

If any one has done it, can we have some actual descriptions of how effective or otherwise HH can be - Male / female / individuals / packs?

:(

OutFlying
05-04-2005, 10:17 PM
Bill, I haven't flown a HH at corvids but flew a male gos last season at them. To enjoy a good flight (not mugging) at crows (not rooks / magpies) a HH would have to be at the limits of their performance, the gos struggled at times to master a crow. He was flown everyday possible and wasn't lacking in fitness or success.

Outflying.

Thanks OF
Presumably you were still generally still slipping from just outside a vehicle?

However, what about a cast of male HH as between them they will reduce the crow's advantage?
Anybody tried it?

OutFlying
05-04-2005, 10:48 PM
Bill, Not just from vehicles - He would fly them on sight whenever in the field. started him from the car but as success was gained I ventured further for the slips.
The first problem is to close the distance down between crow and hawk. The second is to have the aerial advantage to keep above the crow and not let it gain height.
The third problem is to have a hawk with the determination to keep up the chase.
The fourth problem is hiding yourself from the crows, they soon learn what's coming.

After that it's all plain sailing

Forgot to add - This was with an imprint gos but I did catch some rooks and had good flights at crow with a parent reared gos, these were all in the field and none started from a vehicle.

my old female harris took after a crow last season across a field. the chase i rekon lasted 200-300 yrds n she was on the crows tail for most of the way, so close that if the crow had farted my bird would've got a face full!!! but alas so tantalisingly close but not close enough :( . great chase though! my bird also got a major problem with magpies she hates them with a passion think it maybe the fact that the magpies c sit in a tree and appear to mock her! she'll chase them but so far they have illuded her

I went corvid hawking when I was in N Ireland... we would slip them out the window and my MHH absolutely loved it. The biggest problem is the infighting with the wife over who drives and who slips the bird......
