Aléluia ! My first real reply to this post ! Congratulations Yann keep up the good work ! What's the weight
You know I love pics if you dare (please) send some when ever you wish.
I hope not to catch any goose with this tiercel but ducks, teals, Spruce and Ruffed Grouse locally. He even went for a great blue heron flushing out of the cattails...but vire off as he closes the gap, happily for me...and him

My good camera died (screen won't show pics ...gggrrrr) but I'll use the cheap one (pics won't be as good).
He was keen at 750gr this morning and all went well (focus only on me, immediate response everytime)!!! Will enter him on chuckar this week and pheaseants soon . I'll wait for leaves to fall before I take him after the cottontail rabbits (he hits the bunny lure real good:)).
Talking about pheasants... prices have gone up like mad...25$ a pair here. All due to the grain price increase.

Your tiercel gos is beautiful, I wish you a very excellent season! Where do you go for the ducks, in the middle of agricultural fields or in ditches/rivers? I have yet to find a setting suitable for hawking them. You also mentionned ruffed grouse... I know we have talked about that in the past, but I go again... Are they a real everyday goal for you, or a pleasant once-in-a-season exception?
I keep seeing tons and tons of them each and every time I go for a hike, most are much too fast for my male harris, but they are so plentiful if a small male gos could have a serious advantage against them it would be interesting.

I know how you feel and the excitement really gets on top of you
Was going to go for one after I lose my 12yr old HH, but have decided to take on a cast of HH brothers when the time comes. Maybe after that it might be time for a Gos  lol
Duck hawking with a gos just sounds the most spectacular thing :supz:
Please, please, please keep us all informed on your progress and if possible pics and vids would be soo much appreciated :P

That is a big guy ! one of my breeder is flying at around that heavy weight in summer and T° like today is something ! (28°C)
Pheasants are the same price here @ ±16 weeks old. But you need just a few (around 4-6) to make a good job and use the bird laucher to finish the work...
Any pics are good ! don't bother with quality at this stage

Yes Audrey I realy like this bird (parent reared for 5 weeks only making for a good eyassy quality bird). My prime goal last year was to go for the Ruffed Grouse but I had to focus on waterfowl being most abundant here in agri ditches and small rivers in my immidiate area. We even have a good bunch of Spruce Grouse and a small population of Grey Huns. The problem with the Ruffed is that they are too easely spooked in our build up areas and hunting pressure is strong...so they are easy to flush out of range even for shotguns.
Plus... they are sooo FAST !
Maybe it would be possible on a reflush if you can find them again, but that is rather hard to acheive in a dense wood lot. I beleive in more remote areas of Quebec it would be more likely to be straightforward in the bag with a Gos. I recall when I was in CFB Senneterre back in 77-80 I was hunting Ruffed G. wit my Dad and we were using .410's ga. to shoot them because they were so close from us... that would the best set up for a tiecel Gos IMO.
SO that is why,,,since I do not live in Abitibi  (Paradise for the Outdoor sports) I want to find the best hawk to hunt Ruffed G. regularly and with reasonable success in our stressful build-up environment and I named the Coopers Hawks !
They Catches Everything :!: Of course there is always "the set up factor" but from my point of view that is my last resource to be honest after Ruffed G. I will still work my tiercel hard this year on them before I set my mind for good.
Bye for now,
Dan

That's good to hear Dan, you are right they are not easily spooked here but boy when they go, they go! We flush most of them from the side of the trails, or from the trail directly, and they hold still for as long as we don't come very close to them. My hawk almost got one that flushed from under its nose. I may want to try a gos in the future for that purpose, when I am more experienced, there are not enough feathered quarry here for a cooper. Ruffed and Spruce grouse in abundance, ducks, some ptarmigan, some sharptail grouse, and for the passionate some snipes. No partridge, huns, no pheasant. So having a hawk able to catch feather and fur is a must, and Coopers are just too lightly built for hare. In my opinion... But I have never seen one hunting so it's just an uninformed opinion!
Yann, that's so nice for Boris!! Whenever you want to come hunting up here you are welcome, I found some very very interesting places for hawking, and even for falcons on ducks in case Helen would be interested with her Valdi.

And I would really really enjoy tagging along and seeing first hand your tiercel gos on ruffed grouse... Maybe a mini-meet would be interesting, if Yann and Helen would like to come and help saving on gaz... L'Action de Grâces maybe? lol
To answer your original question, my bird is back in training for 2 weeks (or is it 3? lol), and so far he caught a huge yellow mushroom, a very nasty rock, a mouse full of fleas and worms and he almost caught a ruffed grouse, he was so ****ed after missing this one he told everyone about it... What a temper! lol

I LOVE stuff like this. Nothing better than seeing a know-it-all fall flat on his silly face. Mr Ramshaw, if YOU are going to correct people's terminology. YOU should get it right. Tiercel has been the accepted term for male goshawk for hundreds of years.

He looks fabulous Yann! Those first outings are so stressful to the falconer! This year I was happy to fly my bird free after 2 recalls on the creance, but I look forward to my next bird to live this adrenaline rush again! I guess those cottontails you have down there will have a hard time come september 20? :)

Jastreb, you have a real awsome country for austringry, even in the rocky semi desert land you got around Slpit (south west) and elsewhere might find good set ups for the falcons. Nice tiercel you have there, looks quite the same size as mine, hunting weight around 670gr. what's yours ?

Is it true... it takes only 3 abitibian mosquitoes to make a pie ????:lol:
Well, it depends... If you feed the pie to Abitibian guys, then they need lot more meat than that... But for you lot from Montreal and Quebec, yes 3 would be enough! You just have to be careful in the choice of car for mosquito hunting, you need reinforced windshields as regular ones will shatter under the shock of a full-grown abitibian mosquito hiting it at full speed... There is a high level of technic involved... High technology...
It's good to hear about your bird being entered. I can't get my hands on anything captive bred here except for bunnies, so I have to do with what I found. But I am getting better at finding things! lol
Those goshawks look splendid, real hunters. One of these days I will take the plunge.

I know a lot about the "war time" in your area Viktor... One of the problems is with "anti-personal mines" making ideal hawking sites unsafe to say the least. But nothing to compare with Bosnia or Serbia country side though. Lost a couple of fellows there for it. Still some of my best souvenirs are in Croatia, to bad I did'nt know you back then !
