This season has been outstanding for Armthorpe Falcons, and to help celebrate this we are going to give away 2 x 2008, 7/8th gyr x saker males.
We wish for one falcon to go to a game hawker and the other to a pursuit falconer, both falconers need to have the relevant experience and hunting ground to do these outstanding falcons justice.
Last season a few of these falcons proved themselves to be outstanding falconry birds, but do not be under any illusion, they are every inch a gyr and come with the same temperament.
I will post some photos of the birds soon, the falcons are ready to go having had 3 weeks flying in the hack pen.

For anyone interested in taking on one of these stunning birds, just post on what you would do given the chance to fly one of these falcons. What your training regime would be, what you would like to achieve and your experience to date.
We do not wish for either falcon to go on to a land fill or such, just out to good falconers that will do them justice.

We will talk with the falconers who put the best case forward, then determine who will fly the falcons.
Once chosen, that falconer will have the bird for the rest of it’s life, the only reserves are…. the birds are for life of hunting and not to be entered in to a breeding program or should the falconers situation change so that he or she was unable to keep flying the falcon, then the bird should be returned to Armthorpe Falcons.

A very generous offer, which I would be keen to take up if it weren't for my new work committments, and the fact that my age has caught up with me and I find crow hawking a struggle these days( the running bit) although the land around here is not too bad for it as it is fairly open.
All the best to any applicants.
Marra I hope you can sort the wheat from the chaff.

Would love to take up the challenge of one of these falcons given the chance. My preference would be crow hawking with the type of land available to me, but I do have a small amount of land that I use for game (pheasants). My line of work involves bird clearance on a military airfield, but I work part-time, live in a rural area and am able to fly my falcons most days, weather permitting. Here's hoping!!

Hi Dean, I spent all last season with Antony Rhodes flying one of these falcons, I can say that he was one of the best young falcons I have seen.
He spent a week flying low and landing on the floor then just went to the sky like a pro, for the rest of the season he took 600 to 800 + pitches, waited on steady and was as loyal as a seasoned falcon.
This bird flew in the strongest winds as though it was flat calm, he flew with a rapid wing beat that looked like a peregrine.

Dear Chris,

if I were lucky enough to get one of those falcons I'd fly it at game every day of the ........ damn it, why did I sign up under my real name?
I hope you find a couple of perfect falconers for those hawks, and well done for giving them the chance.
I've seen a number of hawks produced by Armthorpe this year --- Bryn and yourself should feel justifiably proud of what you've achieved. The bar has been raised it would appear.
I'd love to call past one day to see first hand what I've heard such good things about.

Best wishes,

Tony.

Too good an opportunity to miss so will give it a go.
First of all I don’t have access to enough game where I live so have concentrated of rooks and crows for the past seven years with a perebarbaryXperegrine. She is currently still in the moult and I have been looking for another bird to make up a team. I live on the west coast of Cumbria where crows are problem to the local farmers (mostly my neighbours) so getting land is not a problem. Can’t use a kite here as I’m in a low flying zone so generally teach my falcons the meaning of height using the mountainside on which I live. Not really sure what you want me to add, I generally use a crow winged lure and up to now have never had a problem entering a bird to crows. If you show them enough every time the hood comes off they seem to get the idea.
I the past few years I’ve spent quite some time flying falcons in the US where I hold a general falconers licence. Interesting to experience the difference in falconry techniques in the two countries. One thing I will add is that a lot of my friends over in the US also train their falcons to come to the fist, wait on and stoop to the lure! This can be very useful in some cases. For example a friend called in a Saker to the fist as it was being pursued by a Bald Eagle the eagle came down to 20ft over his head, If he had thrown a lure out it’s possible the eagle may have crashed it! This is also useful when in thick cover. I intend to train my next bird to come to the fist as well. If you’re a traditionalist and don’t like that idea then I’m screwed!

Sorry, forgot to mention what my proposed training programme would be. Obviously, fitness first. I normally start with long lureing using crow lures and dead crows. Where I live there are a few steep sided valleys which I find helps the young falcon to get 'lift' and to be able to handle the wind. Its then a matter of a few easy slips to start with and then progress from there. I have never had a problem with training and entering pursuit falcons this way. Fitness is the key, especially with pursuit falcons.

On first taking from the pen I would hood it, weigh it , kit it , spray with Frountline.
Next day weigh it
Next day hooding somewhere dim, if it will eat from fist fine .
Repeat until hooding well outside and in , eating trustingly.
Stepping on/off block , with food as distraction(in fist).
Jumping to fist , maybe 20/30ft. All instant , no looking elsewhere (or the weight is wrong!)
Next lure (crow wings , special design , no bones protruding) dropped in front of block with food on .
Lure training from block to 20/30ft..........droppped lure each time.
Hung lure 20ft , 30t , 40ft........
Swung lure , must catch. (pole lure now)
1xpass, if it passes next day creance off.
Extend distance from bird to lure , get it chasing (not stooping like a mad pendulum)
Extend distance (to 1/2 mile ) few passes to lure job done.
Dead crow , job done .
Enter , if bird progressed without hesitation this far it should just DO IT!!
Taking into account fitness and what you require to see , slips kept short for first few kills , increasing distance as bird gets fitter and smarter.

If you havent used telemetry by now ............long slips.

Kill 50 , not likely to get more than 50 good days from now to whenever (1 kill per day, 2 max). Return bird , imped tail no doubt !!

Points scored for number of flatfly killed should be better than points scored for crows killed!!
Points also for landowners you have now got permission on due to seeing a crow taken!!

Hi Chris and Bryn, fantastic offer would love a crack at it.

As you know I can fly over about one thousand acres of open fenland, ten minutes from my door, many falconers have flown there and all say that its perfect longwing country, theres no shortage of game (pheasant, duck and partridge) and now im working for myself again ive definitly got the time.
Ive flown goshawks for the past few years but have also imprinted and kite trained a falcon and re-habilitated spars. Its a very generous offer and if lucky enough I would give my full commitment in producing a top class gamehawk that deserves the Armthorpe name. All the best,:-D Matt

I know Greg very well, he's a genuine honest guy with a house in a location to die for!

The land he has available to him is perfect crow, rook hawking land and I know he'd do it justice.

I've seen the Bryn and Chris's birds when I picked my little fella up and they are superb!

I look forwards to hearing how the challenge goes and Greg, I've got my fingers crossed for ya mate!

Dear Chris,

if I were lucky enough to get one of those falcons I'd fly it at game every day of the ........ damn it, why did I sign up under my real name?
I hope you find a couple of perfect falconers for those hawks, and well done for giving them the chance.
I've seen a number of hawks produced by Armthorpe this year --- Bryn and yourself should feel justifiably proud of what you've achieved. The bar has been raised it would appear.
I'd love to call past one day to see first hand what I've heard such good things about.

Best wishes,

Tony.

just a final note, didnt write about training methods as I personaly believe that the very art of falconry is to be able to adapt your training techniques to a particular bird, no two are the same. I can say that seeing Anthony and Chris's birds fly that the potential is huge and the ability to gain height seem so easy, but I would be able to guarantee an almost perfect setup everytime as all of my ground is accessible with roads running through it so spotting is easy. So with the combination of good setups on good ground and an open minded falconer I hope to achieve a high mounting gamehawk. Thanks again, Matt

Hi Chris,

I popped in to Ladbrookes earlier to see what the odds were on the various falconers who would like to fly one of those falcons --- but betting was suspended when news broke that the winner had already announced himself .
Best of luck to all of you who are keeping your fingers crossed, and look forward to hearing who managed to impress.

That's a real nice gesture, I would of loved one for the corvids, but I've got two of this years birds already. One from yourselves an imprint female peregrine. That I'm chuffed to bits with. She is coming along fine had a break in training for a week in Spain. But back on track with her now, she is absolutely slamming the dragged crow so its going to be sooner rather than later before she's entered.

See you soon regards Terry.

Both the birds are quite beautiful and I was also surprised by the size of the feet. What sort of weight do the 7/8 ths run to? I was flying a Sakeret in the US and that flew at 800gms. 1lb 12.2 ounces

Matthew Patching
24-08-2008, 12:03 AM
I would love the opertunity, (and it realy is an opertunity), My prefered hunting is crows, I have been flying longwings for about 15 years.

I had a poor season last season as I lost a male perexsaker on a flight at a crow. (damn tx packed up, and 10 days of looking didnt help)

Then I had a male gyrxpere given to me by a very good freind, but he got killed chaseing a crow.

I finished the season with a female peregrinexsaker (loaned) and finished up with about 30 head.

However, being the type of chap that Iam I plan ahead, and already have this seasons team asembled, so even if I was to be offered one of these stunning birds I would have to turn it down, as my 08 male GxP has just entered (3 crows in 3 flights) and with my other bird taking his first crow today, I wouldnt have the time to do yet another one justice.

Its a cracking offer through, and I hope that once the selection has been made, they make great birds for whoever gets them.

Just shows what Gyr genes can do. Fying Sakers every day for a few months this year I started to see just what they were capable of. They really are capable of much greater speeds than I had thought possible. With this much Gyr injected she sky is the limit! Will need some good wide open land if being used as a pursuit bird! Whoever is the lucky person had better make sure they have top a notch telemetry set just in-case and know how to use it! I think I would go with the advice from Marshalls and always fly with two transmitters.

I've seen Chris's and Antony's flown on the grouse moor and on lowland game they are big flyers but more than capable of making superb gamehawks in the right hands .The crucial thing as with training all gamehawks I suppose is to give them ample chances and good set ups.Very few people can do that. Here's a pic of Antony with his hawk on the moor.

Well here is the news you have all been waiting for…… but first!
While we understand people trying to plead the case of a fellow falconer who has had some misfortune BUT!
This thread and offer was set out at the outset, the birds would be going to people who… Have the relevant experience, have the ground to fly on, have the time to fly the hawk and the telemetry that will be needed to keep track on these big falcons.
Money or influence does not have a bearing on the decision, the final word will be had by Armthorpe Falcons and no one else.

The falconer who will be offered the white 7/8th male is….. Greg, well done and please contact us ASAP so you can collect the falcon

The falconer who will be offered the dark 7/8th male is Matt King… Again well done and call us to arrange collection.

And last but not least…. Mitch, contact us and we have dark 7/8th male for you to try, he is smaller than his brothers but every inch an awesome falcon.

When the guys come to collect their falcons will post some pics.

Thank you to all who had the guts to put themselves up for one of these birds, we wish you the best in your hawking future.

Nice one Bryn & Chris,

I'm pleased for the guys who have been selected and I'm sure they will do
the business with them and have a great season.

Got home safe and sound! The bird travelled really well and is now sitting in the quiet of the conservatory. (Or as I like to call it the rain lounge), if you look at the photo the ugly one is me! Now the work starts and I’m really looking forward to it.

Many thanks to Greg and Matt for keeping us up to date on the falcons we gave them, great to see both birds doing well.
Unfortunately I have just heard 3rd hand that the falcon we gave to Mitch is now dead! Apparently the bird died from a virus? It would have been nice to hear it from the horses’ mouth, not a nice thing to happen to anyone but it does not take a great deal of effort to stay in touch. (you live and learn)

A message for Greg if you are reading this? I know he is supposed to be in the USA at the moment, a friend of his is supposed to contact us and collect the 7/8h male from this season, the falcon is ready and we have heard nothing!
So if anyone knows of this please give us a call, I would hate the bird to start breaking feathers.
