I'm absolutely devasted, my faithful 12.5 year old GSP NIamh had to be put down this afternoon and whilst tthis is a decent age for a dog, to see her go down hill so fast over the weekend was heartbreaking. those that saw her work will know she was no upland dog, but she was dynamite on pheasant , snip & occasionally on greys. I had to retire her 3 years ago when cattaracts meant she started flushing early and spoiling flights. This is the 1st dog that I have had put down & both Joanne & I were present when the vet administered the drug.So apologies to those whom have sent me emails in the last few days. I will get back to you in the near future
regards

I know how you feel, be strong and think of the good times.

Put up a picture in her memory by all means if you like?

Sorry to hear that sj, when you have them so long they become one of the family and it's always hard to take.
I'm sure you will have many fond memories to treasure.

Good luck mate,

Folks , thank you very much for all your kind thoughts, both our remaining dogs GWP ( 10 yrs) and English setter ( 13 months) seem to be rather out of sorts at the moment. We are beginning to come to terms with our loss & at leats she did not suffer too long as we decided to act swiftly. Basicly she started to go down hill just before the weeken , holding back on our walk on friday. by saturday it was dificult for her to walk & I was clinging to straws, as she has sufferd from rheumatism in the past & was hoping htis was the case, however seeing her go down hill over the weekend, dragging her hind quarters and losing all the muscle coverage along her spine in the , she was even whincing when she tried to lie down and get up. The Vet told us thta it was something called MSA( Multi System Atrophy) ~ which to means everything shutting down, what we in the past called old age. I will upload a few pics of her in the near future. She was apart from a good worker , a real dear

Can't say anything that'll make you feel better I know.
Our current dog is now nearly 7, but I still get a lump in my throat when I think of our old dog - a stalwart companion and smart as they came.
We had to put him down on a Xmas boxing day, I'd pay triple what we did just to have him back even now. Turns out it was brain cancer, like yours, went downhill rapidly in 2 or 3 days.
Like everyone else has said, think of the good times, even now, we laugh ourselves silly at some of his old antics. Luckily, we have a few on VCR - and lots of pictures to remember him by, including a loverly portrait done by the wife.
Our thoughts go out to you.

Yup - Steve, our vet, just left the room so me and the missus could have a good old bawl. As we did for weeks afterwards.
We had him cremated and scattered his ashes on his favourite walking place, even in death he managed to pull a stunt that made us laugh. As we started to solemnly scatter his ashes, a freak gust of wind came from nowhere and sent it everywhere, my wife turned to me and said "trust him!" :)
