View Full Version : A new mews

I've just dug the footings for my mews, there will be an adjoining door from the shed which will become the weighing room etc. The shed is 16'x10' and I'll be adding another 8' for the mews. I'm laying a single course of concrete block as a base with hardcore in covered with peashingle, I've dug a bit of a land drain as that area can get a bit soggy after heavy rain. I'm hoping it'll blend in as one large shed when it's finished. I'll also be building a weathering on the lawn.

Nice one mate, looking v good?

As far as drainage is conserned, you cant get enough, imagine a heavy session with a powerwasher for a couple of hours? where will all the water go?

I've built dozens and dozens and dozens of chambers and the one thing i have learned is to make special provision for good drainage!

Good luck with the rabbit hutch.

Right completley off topic now! electric shock ferret collars.

Your ferret lies up wearing it's new tracking collar, which has also a small shock system incorporated, do you dig or does it get buzzed?

Would you use one and do you think there is a market for such a devise?

Answers on a post card pls....

There will be a market for one for all the wrong reasons .
There are too many impatient people using ferrets for falconry and it wont be long until they get trigger happy with a device like that.
Also ferrets are abused too much now as it is.
Muzzles are another example.
How do you know when your ferret is struggling to move a rabbit out of a stop, digging its way through a smaller part of a tunnel, getting a face full of dirt from a rabbits back feet, having a bit of knife and fork with the rabbit. How do know what is going on? Know one does and the impatient falconer will just start zapping. If you give someone the means they will use it.
I am currently trying another method. My thinking is to prevent the ferret getting near the rabbit so there isn't a lie up. If the rabbit is always in front or aware of the ferrets position it will be harder for the ferret to grab it. I am using a adapted ferret finder collar at the moment for this.
I will keep you posted.

As you can see I got the concrete laid and have started collecting hard core, blocks should go up this weekend weather permitting. We had a couple of days of heavy snow and rain, the drain worked a treat there not a drop of water laying.

Looking good, whats the bird? My mews will have solid walls, a covered roof, with bars on the window made of overflow pipe. The window measures 1.6m x .75m. The walls are 12mm ply on a 4"x 2" frame, lined on the inside with 6mm ply. It must have taken a while to sort out your bars, what are they made of?

Dave Whitt
12-05-2005, 09:26 PM
The bird is an imprint Gos, the bars are 3/4" galvanised tube (3mm wall so it wont bend) bought it cut to length 1.2m, 70 bars cost £20, times sacle was about 3 days to build the whole mews start to finnish. The bars are easy to put in.

Jon

Jackobean, looks good mate were you get the bars from?

Gary.b its coming on ok look forward to seing it finished

Dave Whitt
12-05-2005, 09:43 PM
My father is the comercial director for a metal fabrication company hence the good price I can get more at that price, but it would probabally cost to ship each bar probabally ways about 500g, but standard price for 3/4" galvanised tube is about 30p per meter from a good metal supplier and comes in 6.1m lengths, most good suppliers will cut to length free of charge

Thanks for the encouragement chaps, I don't know when I'll finish it, by August anyway, only getting a couple of hours at it here and there, what with shift work and kids etc, as for the trial separation, I was sitting on a deckchair in the shed this morning at 7.30 drinking a cup of tea thinking what a nice quiet place this is and that I must get a bigger bolt on the door.

nice job gary, it is a problem trying to find the time but i'm sure you'll get there, i found that the innitial construction whent smoothly, it was all the bits and bobs to finnish off that put me behind, the more i sat and looked the more changes i made, hell i even changed the door the day i was picking me bird up, talk about cutting it fine.....if it had whent wrong i would havea new harris and a new mew without a door. best wishes mate.

NICE ONE M8!!Have you completly covered the roof gary?I did with mine, after talking to Albie(Nimbus) i thought it better to keep it all dry,I will be tethering my bird outside when ever poss! And she'll still get some rain/sun through the windows

Are you planning on adding a weathering area?
They look great by the way. Makes me feel like adding onto my own!

Gary.B
24-05-2005, 12:59 AM
Thanks chaps, yes I completely covered the roof, the wind can get pretty bad up here sometimes, I could see a half open roof getting ripped off. A guy I know up here glazed a section of his roof, but he said the condensation was really bad in the winter. So I will be building a weathering on the lawn beside the mews, not sure what I'm going to make it out of yet, it will have to be strong because its open fronted its gonna catch the wind, so I didn't fancy fence panels.

I like the look of the weathering, I wonder what the measurements are, it looks almost 8 foot across at the bottom, and what about 4 foot high, the mesh back is a good idea to let the wind through. The perch would have to be side on because of the shape?

Tim Laycock

The perch would have to be side on because of the shape?
Not so much becauce of the shape, Because of the getting "hung up" issue I think.
Not entirely sure though. Jack Merlin is the man to ask :)

27-05-2005, 08:02 PM
Been on nights this week, so havn't got to much done, just put up a couple of sheets of 1/2 ply to line it, 4 more to do, then I'll put the bars in that'll be worth a picture, hope I can get them straight. What bird is going in yours? Just heard my chick is a week old now  , I feel like a new dad again. Enjoy your sunshine.

Here's the inside, not much to see. Have to wait till the first weekend in September it seems a long way off, everythings in place I'll just sit back and chill or do some overtime to pay for it all. And anyway doesn't everybody have a pixie in their weathering?

Move your perch away from the wall corners, I now use a t-perch at both ends of the avairy. No chance of wing tipping the feathers on the walls.
