we were phoned about 7am this morn and was told that our pup was born :D . we've got the pick of the litter but we want a bitch coz we already got a rotti dog and don't want any problems bringing up the 2 dogs.

now the decision is which one do we have the mums had 2 bitches maybe 3 coz, there was another born about an hour and a half after the rest. don't know the sex of that 1 yet.

Is there anything to look out for when picking a good dog? it will only be used with birds. may try it with guns just to get her used to them.

Out of the 2 i know so far 1 aint stopped feedin of her mum. the others all over the place already, licking her mum sqeaking, exploring. the runt i've got no details on yet.

personally i would probably go for the active 1 but i've been told springers can be a little hyper maybe problems in the future?

but what am i lookin for size? behaviour? owt else??

cheers guys

The shooting and trial lads will tell you to go for a fast, bold puppy with plenty of go in it. Personally I would go for one somewhere between this and the runt. As a falconry dog you want something a little slower and less hyper. JMO I'm sure Jack will be along to tell you the right way! lol!!

I agree with H4wka,

I was always told to find the middle ground which tends to give you some balance.

Always worked for me

If I were choosing a pup for search work I would go for the naughty dog, the one thats into everything, it would be easy to train but a nightmare in the house etc, it would have to be kept on top of. If I were choosing one for falconry, just for flushing I'd go for the steadier one, for obvious reasons. But don't confuse steady for being timid, there's a trend to breed timid dogs at the moment, they are easier to train not to run in. I would avoid the timid one as I would difficult to socalize. So to sum up choose the dog that greets you, toss a ball of paper to see what it does, don't choose the dog that ignores it, and make a loud noise to see if it's fightened. Good luck its a bit of a lottery, we normally puppy test at 49 days.

Hi Mate,

Just pick the one you like, no one can tell you which one will be good or bad, even the experts cant tell and this is why they train several and sell the ones who dont turn out.

everything looking good so far with my pup. apparently shes been leaving her mum n doing her business on newspaper at only 2 n 1/2 weeks thats a result!

little sod though the owner leaves them all in a huge great cage normally with door open but shes had cause from time to time to shut it. but our little one keeps opening it n wandering off! she came home the other day and almost put her shopping down on her!!!
