Mmmm I agree dead lure, but, always a but, the dummy has many advantages and I will only mention one!

You can always keep it in your bag.

HM, just make sure you catch each time you go hunting - fresh lure everytime  Seriously what are you using the lure for ? training or recall.

If anyone is interested, I have just ordered 6 rabbit pelts, as I'm gonna make a few dummy-bunnies with real fur!!
Don't know how long they will last but it is worth a go.

If training I'd use a dead rabbit, for the recall a leather lure with a small amount of meat attached.

sean mate i had every intention of using a draged dead bunny, but i never got to it,i whent straight to the field i thought dragged or running the reaction is what i was interested in,however i did train sky to a recall lure,a medium horse shoe type leather lure i tied bits of chick to it and got her to take it,and in the early hunting days befoer she entered i would always put a good ration on the lure, swing it,throw it and run,she would nail it get a half crop from it,the point being that even tho she'd had flights and missed the day still ended on a positive note,as a result if i ever need her attention or need her by me for any reason she will come any distance if she can see the lure being swung.

I used a proper rabbit skin around a canvas gun dog dummy a few years ago and it is still going strong . i leave it hanging up in the shed where it is dry and cool and it seems to be fine. although i havent used it for a while cos my old fhh knows exactley what to do with a rabbit. its still in a very good usable condition. all the best KEV.

Depends what you're looking to do with the bird. For teaching to hunt I'd use a carcass of some intended quarry, though for pure lure work, a leather pad with food attached is adequate.

A lure is to 'lure' your bird back to you (aswell as for excercise), so with that in mind, so long as your bird associates it with food, you could use an old boot!!

For hunting purposes though, I'd go with a carcass each time.

One of our apprentices had great trouble entering his 04 PR HH male last year, in fact he was only entered on Rabbit about 5 weeks ago?

The problem all stemmed from His rabbit Lure, too much work to it rather than the real thing? combination of lack of time to go out and get the real thing, rabbit skin lure that wasnt anywhere near real enough and a slightly high bird.

Dragged the problem on for months!!!

The bird was actually frightened by the real Rabbit even after 4 month training to the lure?

Natural Lures work best every time!
