Today i met the biggest European Eagle Owl i have ever met. A guy asked me to make some anklets and jess for his eagle owls. He turned up with a Bengal and a European.

We put the new anklets and jess on and i said i would weigh the birds for him. The EEO felt quite heavy on the glove. Quite a bit heavier than mine who's flying weight is 3lb 10. Put this guy's EEO on the scales and it weighed in at 6lb 11. This he thinks is it's top weight.

He doesn't know to much about the history of the bird. Apart from the person who had it before hasn't flown it for a while and the bird has a 1997 ring on.

Anyone known of 1 bigger or similar size?

Hi GDN, as I'm sure you will know, there are vast differences between the male and female. At 6lb.11 I would have reckoned that to be average as I have seen a couple flying around the 6.3/4lb mark and one that was used in static display at 7.1/2 lbs. the males are generally in the 4.1/2lb+ region.

Graham, Cheshire waterlife have a female with one eye who is ancient .

This bird was thought to have originated from Sweden and is a monster last weighed at over 9lb's (ask Sprout for actual weight?)

It's worth a visit just to see it even if you dont like owls?

I've seen that big female - I thought she was big? We have a male flying at 4lb 10oz and a female at 6lb 5oz. Not as big as the above lol!

I spoke to the guy today and asked how things were going. He said it jumped about 3m for some food. Like i said the guy doesn't know it's flying weight or to much about it's history apart from the fact that it hasn't been flown for quite while.

As for the 1 eyed owl that varmint mentioned - the word monster springs to mind.
