Recieved Vinny yesterday morning & what a nice little chap he is :?
He was unhooded for the hour and half journey on a cadge without a single bate which i thought was pretty cool considering he has not been touched for a few weeks, getting him out the landrover was a different story  hanging upside down, swearing at me, you name it he done it.
After a talking too i managed to hood him & he weighed in at 1Ib 9 1/2
Put him in his new home to settle, uhooded him & crept back low,his wings came out, mouth wide open i thought here we go but he had second thoughts & concentrated on his surroundings. Left him alone for the day.

06/04/05

Finished work early today due to the rain, went to get vinny out & he went nuts.
Managed to undo the leash & hood him up,weighed in at 1Ib 8 1/2
He is still way to high to do anything with so i kept him on the fist for an hour or so and he was pretty cool about it....until i moved my right arm & the swearing started again. Went to make my way outside & the bat impersonations appeared again,he he oh well i thought hood on & back to his mews with him.
Gave him a chick head which he ate of the fist then put him on his block hopefully tomorrow he will be showing signs of wanting to be near me as his weight will creeping down-might even get him coming a few metres on the creance if the weather holds out[glow=red:d15ac96372][shadow=red:d15ac96372][/shadow:d15ac96372][shadow=red][/glow:d15ac96372]

Lovely beast is Vinny. Had an encounter with him and Paul, well Vinny first. If it wasn't for Vinny then I wouldn't be here and coming to the end of a fantastic Falconry course!! Say thanks to him! Sat on my mates fist as good as gold for ages!

Good luck for the future with him

Well Paul, I hope all goes well for the two of you and you get as much enjoyment from him as I had.

Here are some pictures of the day we met. One of Paul and the bird is of course, The Hooligan Boy himself!

I think im getting somewhere with him now, crept into his mews with half a gutted chick in my gloved hand & the first thing he done was throw himself off his block & started swearing at me.
Let him carry on for a minute or so then he hopped back on his block
so i slowly put my gloved hand towards him with the chick & he stepped up-nice 1 i thought-he didnt stay there long though, started swearing at me & flung himself to the ground so i quickly undone the leash & hooded him.
Weighed in today at 1Ib 8oz,only lost half oz in 24hrs-need to get him working so his weight drops a bit quicker but the weather when i got home from work was s**t so i just had him on the fist for a while.
He is pretty mean tempered when unhooded on the fist  he doesnt get back up once he starts bateing just hangs there screaming his little head off  need to get some more weight off him sharpish so i can get him going again & nail some black stuff
Wont be long !!!!

just a bit of manning today as he was a complete **** whenever i went near, hooded him & went indoors unhooded him & just kept him at arms length

9/04/05

He is a lot better today weighed in at 1Ib 7 1/2,im able to pick him up & he regains the fist still swearing at me though lol
he also takes the hood while on the fist rather than upside down so he is getting there
took him down to his flying area & put him on the creance, thought he might be interested as he has not had a decent crop of food since i received him,his weight seems to be taking a while to drop-even with a cold snap last night he only lost half ounce
anyway put him on a post & walked about 20ft away & called & dropped the lure-nothing !!!
tried again- nothing !!!
gave it a few little twitches & he took off but flew over the lure & was brought down by my assistant-too heavy still
picked him up & went for a walk around a couple of fields & he is becoming quite settled on the fist & lets you hood him without bating
i just need another ounce of him & then maybe progress will really begin

weighed 1Ib 7oz-tried him on the lure but wasnt interested, just flew in the opposite direction  oh well never mind
manned him up for a while until i though he had had enough of me
fed him a whole chick

11/04/05

:D getting somewhere now,weighed in at 1Ib 6 3/4
took him down to his flying ground, creance on, hood off, walked 40ft away & dropped the lure & called him.
few little bobs of the head & he was away like a rocket, cool i thought but he didnt seem to be stopping at the lure he was really motoring & i thought he was going to chop the lure or fly over it & straight line it but no...he smashed into it full speed & tumbled on the grass with it-thats what i call a bind
if that was a real rook then its got no chance 8) fed him a chick & left it at that as he started swearing at me the little hooligan
just need to cut him a bit finer now,1 more day on the creance,2 days long luring & we are away

Hawkmaster
11-04-2005, 07:20 PM
Paul as I said he has style, he binds and does not let go, wait till you see him take on a 2lbs 5oz seagull, he is a monster! Mad how he just kicks in though, isn't it?

BTW I think he prefers gulls to rooks if they are both in the same field.

1Ib 7oz today, took him down to his flying ground & put creance on hood off.
walked about 60 ft away & swung the lure & called him & he was off after it again-this time he chopped it & raked up then motored back down on it in a split second-this guys fast
he was a lot better on the lure today,no mantling like yesterday just a little bit off swearing. once he had finished the chick head on the lure i called him to the fist with a leg & he was instant though once on the fist he screamed at me a bit more lol
placed him back on the block & called again this time slightly further away & again he was instant
let him eat his ration & went for a stroll round a couple of fields with him on the fist then called it a day
think tomorrow will be last day on creance then move onto some proper long luring all being well :D

weighed in at 1Ib 63/4 oz
3 calls to the lure at 100ft,first time he jumped upto the fist from the lure then the next couple of times he tried flying away from me-angry chappy still

14/04/05

weighed 1Ib 61/4 oz
first call to the lure was spot on-instant,he even jumped to the fist without screaming at me
second call to the lure was a bit hesitant then once on it he didnt want me coming near him
in total he had 20g of chick
i was hoping to be flying him loose tomorrow but i need him to be a bit better behaved otherwise he will be off
need to get his weight down a tad more i reckon

Weighed in at 1Ib 6oz
4 flights to the lure on the creance & he was spot on-no screaming no swearing just perfect :D
he even ran over to me from the lure to get his pick up piece, such a sweet little chap
Tomorrow is the day when he is going loose, half a dozen calls to the lure increasing the distance up to 1/4 mile should do the trick for him
Sunday i shall try him on some black stuff :finga:

weighed in at 1Ib 5 3/4 oz
flew him loose today :D 3 flights long luring up to a distance of 400 metres & he was excellent
4th flight i made him pass & he raked up & circled above the neighbouring
field then he made a shallow stoop, raked up once more then motored down out of sight
all of a sudden about a dozen rooks took off squawking like mad i didnt see vinny appear so i thought he had nailed himself some dinner
as i got to the field gate he was nowhere to be seen so back to the vehicle i went & got receiver out, tracked him down about 2 miles away in a tree so i guess he had tail chased the rook & lost it
his temper is a lot better now jumps to the fist when called & hopefully we are on the right track
lets see what tomorrow brings our way

17/04/05

weighed 1Ib 6oz
well today was another track down job, slipped him at a rook about 50yds away & as soon as the rook was airborne vinny diverted away & cruised over the trees down the far end of the field. About twenty rooks & jackdaws were in the neighbouring field & they all took to the air but vinny just cruised on over them :(
I then climbed through the hedge & spotted him flying around on a jolly the little sod wouldnt come in to the lure so i let him get out of sight then drove around the country lanes until i got a signal in the vehicle.
He then came into the lure from 300 yards away or more,so his weight has to come down a tad more by the look of things. Fed him a gutted chick & manned him up,nice chap really :?

Spent the rest of the afternoon finishing off vinnys new mews

:finga: weighed in at 1Ib 5 3/4oz
slipped him at a group of rooks about 80 yards away & he slammed into one as it got airborne, he then tumbled with it & nailed it proper 8)
This guy is something else, fed him the breast & took him off with a chick.
Turned him loose today in his new mews & he is loving it.
Took the day off work as it was raining hard this morning & i managed to enter the saker at last-maggie was about 100 yds away in the sheep field paying no attention to me behind the hedge, slipped the saker & called her into the lure then hid it behind my back so as the saker cruised over me & the hedge the maggie took to the air but the saker already dominated it & threw herself onto it in a fine style.
Not what i intended to enter her on but at least it was a kill
What a day... :D

8) weighed in at 1Ib 5 3/4 0z,first slip was at a crow 100 odd yards away sitting on a pile of horse manure
Got vinny on the fist, unhooded him, let him rouse then shown him the crow & he was off-so was the crow lol
Just before the crow reached a line of trees he took it out the air about 50ft up,smashed it to the ground & battled with it for a good few minutes before he finally put it to rest.
When i arrived at the scene the crow had locked its foot around Vinnys so he couldnt get both feet on the crow but it slowly unlocked as Vinny bit further into the neck. Let him feed up on the breast & tried to take him off with a chick but he was having none of it,he covered the crow completely with his outstretched wings & flung himself forward again i tried but he jumped off the crow & started attacking my feet & ankles-nutter
Eventually i got him to hop on the glove to the chick & walked him back to the vehicle, once there he was nice as pie again. Hood on, cleaned him up & took him home. Its all good.

Bang on weight mate, two slips, two kills, I must of passed on a dud, I think? Good job you habving ENOUGH fun yet?

My dad just reminded me of someflying we did with him, give up some updraught wind if he is a bit high and he will sky out and that is funn too, but expect to go pick him up off a kill a few miles away.

The best thing about Vinny is the size of his heart!

weighed 1 Ib 6oz

Slipped him at a crow about 50 yds away but he lost it as it went into some trees so vinny raked up & went off on a jolly :x
That was at 5.30,tracked him down at 8.00pm & he was in a crop field with a crow underneath him so not to bad after all. Just a shame i missed the flight.
Took him off with a chick after he had the breast & head from the crow.

No way mate,he was a little s**t. When you approach him now he bows down to you & makes a little noise then steps up on the fist-cool
i am chuffed mate though he could do with trying to FIND ME when he's missed a slip instead of me finding him lol
Im on the lookout for gulls, there are normally some on my local playing field but i cant really slip him there as people will be twitching their curtains looking whats going on & probably report me.
I will go in search at the weeekend & hopefully make a kill or two

Not flown him for the last couple of days as he had a good feed up thursday night.
Weighed in today at 1Ib 5 1/2oz,slipped him at a crow but didnt really seem interested as he just circled up ,up & away. Tried to get him down with the lure but he was off :?
Tracked him down to his usual place where he goes but this time there was no kill.Lured him in,hooded him up & tried again.
Next slip was about 50-70 yards away, hood off but there was no immediate chase so i cast him off gently & he followed the rooks into the air but no commitment to kill was there. He was being swooped at by a couple of the crows & they was literally on his tail so he could of easily binded to one of them if he wanted to so im not sure whats got into him at the moment. Came to the lure okay when i called him in this time. Lets see what tomorrow brings

Weighed in at 1Ib 5 1/2, same as yesterday. Took him down to some horse fields where i knew i could get a good easy slip.
Spotted a single rook feeding about 50 yards over the hedge, hood off & let him go-vinny made a shallow arc then nailed it :D the rook didnt know what hit it,it didnt even fight back just lay there on its back trying to keep vinny away with its feet but to no avail.
Game was over in a few seconds, let him feed up well then took him off with a chick. One thing i did notice though was that vinny was short on breath & he had only flew 50 yards or so & it took him longer than usual to get stuck into it-seems like he could be a tad low. I shall push his weight back up to the 1 Ib 5 3/4- 6 oz mark & see how he goes.
Apart from that he's cool 8)

Weighed 1Ib 6oz
Took him to a few cattle fields & slipped him downwind onto a jackdaw which was 50 odd yards away,he was off the glove like a rocket & chased it into a spinney.
Vinny then raked up & cruised along in the wind for a moment before folding up into a stoop 8) & was heading for a group of crows in the next field. He just missed the first one he aimed for,i saw the crow actually s**t itself lol
I was then expecting vinny to appear again as i was on a slope & couldnt see the bottom of the field then all the crows reappeared & was going mad, dive bombing & making a right old noise.Cool, vinnys on a kill i thought so i ran like mad over to the spot waving my arms & shouting to try & scare the crows away but by the time i got there i reckon the crow must have got away as i saw vinny taking off  & all the crows flying away.
Vinny then decided to go on a jolly, wouldnt come down to the lure so i let him go,walked back to the landrover, had a fag & waited. After about 10-15 minutes i saw him playing in the wind over a small wood so out came the lure & after a lot of ho-ing he came down. Decided to call it a day as the weather was changing rapidly.Fed him 1oz pigeon,1 oz beef & a chick.

Not sure what was going on in his head today, spotted some crows about 300yds away in the cattle field & i thought if i slip him from where i was standing he might be able to gain height & put in a stoop on the crows- but no vinny had other ideas
He went off the fist & sat in a bloody tree in the opposite direction, left him there to see if he was planning an attack but no such luck, tried luring him back & he flew off on a jolly, went out of sight cruising around for about twenty minutes or so. When he came in view again he was keen on the lure so brought him down & went on a drive round to find some gulls but the only ones i spotted were cruisng around in the sky about 1000ft up

8) Weight 1Ib 6oz,first slip was a miss, tracked him down 2 miles away on a rook  He had only just broken into it so i took him off with a bit of beef & continued hunting.
Next slip was back at the cattle fields, small group feeding out in the open about 150yds away, hood off held him up & he was away. Took one clean out the air,i think he was even more keen as i didnt give him a good feed from the first one. Drove down the track to the other side of the field & all the cattle was starting to surround vinny on the kill so i took him off with another piece off beef & threw the rook onto the track out of harms way & let vinny continue feeding. With that he dragged the rook underneath the landrover & settled under there to eat his meal

no ringers yet mate,he catches up with them before they know whats happening. Maybe i shall try slipping him on rooks in flight shortly.
Some of these rooks have started to moult out & the chases last for a couple of hundred yards to 1/2 mile or so,i think i need to give him longer slips so the rook can get a fair distance in the air (maybe)lol

Weighed 1Ib 6oz

Took the weekend off from flying him & gave him a good feed up of quail.
After work Monday i took him down to some fields with sheep in & slipped him at a rook a far old distance away & he was off after it,he soon caught up with it but couldnt quite bind to it as the rook was twisting & turning like mad. They went off over a small spinney & i was expecting to go tracking him again but a few moments later vinny appeared still chasing but with 4 or 5 rooks behind him, really funny to watch  then the rook dropped like a stone followed by the 'Hooligan' -Game over, the rook was captured & the followers were going mad trying to scare vinny away but im pretty quick on foot & got there pretty sharpish.
Let him eat the breast & part of the head & took him off with a chick, got him sussed out i think now-he is cool.
Going to fly him every other day as im going to be busy with the pere/lanner,might even put him up for the moult at the end of the month-shall wait & decide then.

Paul my buddy! I am really chuffed you are having fun with him and it just shows what time, dedication and skill you are giving him! Well done.

Do you have any open like spaces to start on those long long flying flights?

Cheers HM,yes there is a good piece of land about half an hours drive away which is like a huge valley-see for miles & there are country lanes which go across in places so i should be able to track him ok. Im working him up to the long flights as i think if i slip him too far away from the intended slip he will go & find his own :(
Weighed 1Ib 6 1/2oz
Took him out anyway even though he was high, ignored the slip i gave him & like Hawkmaster said he skyed out & he just kept floating up & up into the clouds 8)
Waited around for 15-20 minutes before getting the tracker out & as i scanned the sky he was approaching me in the distance, cool he came back without going looking for him lol
Fed him up with 3 chicks & kept him away from the pere/lanner as he wants to murder her still...

Weighed 1Ib 6 1/8 oz

Slipped him at some rooks feeding about 150yards away & the chase was on. They all saw vinny coming & stayed in a tight group as they took to the wing,he was cutting through the flock like a missile 8) it seemed to me like he was playing about with them-he was more like a sheepdog herding them up
This continued for a couple of minutes & the flight was going off a fair old way,in the end i lost sight of him so drove around for a good half an hour before i could pinpoint him & he was in a spinney with a jackdaw under him. Nice 1 Vinney 8) let him fill up with it then took him off with a chick

Im working him up to the long flights
Best I have seen him on is about a 1/4 mile one down a deep valley at rooks and gulls amongst some cattle, he did a goshawk slip on them flying very low and just popping over the three fences in the way and then also raked around them picking the victim he slammed into it and was attacked by the group of corvids, the gulls weren't seen for dust!

How high have you seen him fly?

Falconry Electronics mate why you ask Chas?

HM-I had him ring up to roughly 500ft when he was 1/2 oz over his hunting weight, got stooped on by a wild spar i think it was, couldnt quite make it out but it then climbed to twice the height of vinny.
That was the day vinny came back to me,rather than me going looking for him

Weighed 1Ib 6 1/2, a bit high for hunting so just gave him some high jumps & let him go for a fly around for half an hour or so. Tracked him down about 3miles from where i released him,he was floating round in circles above a rookery but he wasnt interested in them. Out with the lure & down stooped Vinny, fed him his meal & changed him over for the Pere/lanner. Going to put him up for the moult shortly as he's dropped some feathers over the last couple of days-get a couple more rooks first though !!!!!

I ask because what you do is a good advertisement for it! It has been used quite a bit on this thread and seems to be a very reliable system.
Well done, you have learn't to use it correctly and it is earning its money.
My comments are all positive.

Now this is a cracking thread for a beginner to read. It details exactly what can be achieved with the right commitment. You,ve flown the tits off this bird and it sounds as if it just enjoying every moment. Brilliant BFC.

HM - Just read that other thread. Very well recorded m8. I personally like the sound of this bird even though I aint a lover of hybrids. He sounds like a ******* man. Just what you want when flying at gulls and crows.
Brilliant.
Ive just had an idea. The creators of this forum should use these diaries and experiences for the purposes of creating a yearly subscribed book. All subscriptions could help pay towards developing a legally binding apprenticeship scheme. Set aside to this voluntary scheme developed by LANTRA.
Just an idea.
