hi folk,
went down to my local falconry centre, to see some of their new additions, one of which was a female martial eagle, the only one in the country and probably one of the largest flying birds in the country. it flys at nearly 12lbs i think, would this be britains largest flying bird?

If you mean Wales it might be the only one but not in UK, there are quite a few centres with them now. They certainly are most impressive though

I have a book at home called "Garden of Eagles".
The author (David Fox) had a female golden eagle(Berkut) that was flying at over 17 lbs :!:
The eagle was eventualy swapped to Phillip Glasier for- (are you ready for this!)
£40 and a tiercel finnish goshawk :!:
How times change :!:

It's actually the Great Bustard.
It used to be a native bird of this country, but they were hunted to extinction here. I believe thay have recently re-introduced them onto Salisbury Plain.
It also happens to be the largest flying bird in the world, up to about 20kg, I think.

African crowned eagle females fly at about 4 1/2 kilos. When I was at a centre in SA a young one was brought to us that had been found in a nest in a tree that was chopped. It was not fully grown and had to be helped with food by humand, (us). I had this bird flying at 4.5 kilos and could litarally fly straight up! I would stand on the first floor balcony and get it doing jump ups to the fist of a height of about 4 or 5 metres!! Basically it's a 4 or 5 kilo goshawk.
It's also the strongest eagle in SA, living on monkeys etc, it lives and flys in the tree canopy.
Martiall females are 6 or 7 kilos and are ******g monsterous beasts!!!
