Not the best design or material to make a hawk box out of.

i seen that on there ..i thought the same......but i dont know what number you need it to be set on to cook a hawk...an hour or less maybe in the back off the truck :?:

it might be harder to get the hawk in, that has to wait till you drop the silent metal drawbridge down whilst it sits patiently on the perch.

It would be alright for defrosting chicks if you forgot the night before

But then in winter, when the hawks are flown, it is not very hot in the UK?

I didn't realise you'd use a different box when you started a fresh hawk in July or August / September. Is there a free wooden or plastic one for these months.

Only joking......

I don't see any problems with this giant hood other that it needs a falconer with half a ****ing brain to not leave it in the sun....I include computer fans on all my giant hoods so they can plug into the cig lighter for circulation. I think the only thing I see wrong with that GH is the persons taste in color.

Yea, can't say I would use one made from aluminum, but I do know several falconers that have custom boxes mounted in the bed of their pick up trucks and they are made from aluminum. One I can think of lives in South Texas where it is routinely above 43 c.
As for the green manky look.....I'll pass

You wouldn't be able to open the door whislt it was still in the vehicle (no head room above box in most Uk vehicles). Also while placing hawk in box your spare hand would be holding the door upright, then if your hawk made a break for it while closing the door the guillotine action wouldn't be advised. Apart from these issues it's a brilliant design....

I didn't scroll down on the page to see the full design of that green wonder. It is a **** design isn't it!?! I have never seen anyone make such a door as that....How much harder could it be to simply add a couple of hinges huh?

IAmTheWeasel

In that wooden box, I would ask him to raise the perch up a bit as it look too low and that tail on most raptors would be in the ****.

I thought you'd seen that part, it was made for a three handed falconer.
One hand to hold the hawk, one for door, one for the leash.

Also imagine the rattle on the door, echoing round the box, no catches to provide a firm closure. Also the light ingress due to no baffles.

Apart from that, put me down for two.

also forgot about the condensation on a cold night if you stayed out for any reason.

put me down for three.

funnily enough when `i started getting O/night/ travel boxes made fro both accipiters/ broadwings & falcons the 1st batch were great, made from white PVC? stuff but vthe second batch the made for me was black taht I refused delivery of because of possible heat implications. well known falconer was concerned about condensation but have bnever had probs myself

have black one myself, no light ingress at all, no problems with condensation or heat. Big vent holes at top / back of box with large baffle to prevent light ingress. Found black to make a darker box, plastic quite a good insulator and in the car, not a great deal of difference between white and black plastic regarding heat

Hi outflying the problem is not with sensible folk like you &I , & many others on the llist, but as and equipment provider , we trry to make sure all equipment is idiot proof. I know if I sell a black box to somone they are going to take thir harris out for a drive in the midday sun in the middle of summer and whilste any colured box will not stop the deimise of hawk/falcon surely balck / metal will help accelerate this

Can do later in the week, its at a friends house. Made from wood suitable for a male gos / harris - that's what i made it for. But has transported bigger hawks.

The door on this one is hinged the wrong side, the perch seems too low and narrow (diameter) and the vent holes are more like hawk windows :D

Yeah but it's suitable for a right handed falconer who flys a smallfooted hawk with no tail and wears a hood

this may just be a tad off topic but i'll get right back on tracks after but do owls get car sickness? A mate of mine has a european eagle owl and a barn owl. he uses one of those humongous dog/animal carriers (one each) but the poor owls could not stand up properly. He annoyed me so much with these boxes, i built him one (and engraved it hahahaha i just cant leave any wood unengraved).

i thought it was down to the way the owls travelled in those boxes. the poor owls just seem to come out of the box all drunk like and it takes them over an hour or so to sort of settle and come round. He hasnt yet tried my box so i cant tell if was the travelling conditions. I asked him the most obvious one about the ventilation in his box and he said there is plenty. Does anyone else have any birds that dont like to travel? if so what do you do to help them apart from no more travelling before you smarty pants decide to answer  )
