hello everyone,

just to let you know after 20 odd drawings i have now designed my mews for my future buzzard. It was a very difficult decision but seeing as this will be my last bird I really didnt want to miss out on having a go with a diurnal. the HH is out of the question because i dont have the right hunting grounds for it and i expect he/she would get very bored. So common buzzard it is.

i was going to use the whole of the land left i had here but... it is too close the street and i dont want to make it an easy target. I was also planning on using the old stable but have recently found it is not really that safe (the building is well over 100 years old and is now crumbling  Soooooooooooooooooooo i shall use part of the what i initially wanted to do and will be able to protect the mews/birds a lot more efficiently. But...... I have the wonderful job of clearing the site completely and pulling out four pine trees  here is the starting point!

Good luck with it, Bubo. Don't use up too much room, your little girl will kill ya! Did you decide on your roofing material?

right here is my first plan and now for my questions.

1) I would like to know where the best place to put the perches would be and i dont like corner to corner ones. (one possible idea i had was to put a stantion in the middle of each side of the pen with a wooden cup on each stantion then i can place and take away the perches when necessary (the thing is my ideas arent always the brightest ones and end up being the most complicated ones  )

2) for the food drop, i have placed it in the wall right beside the 2nd door (the ? 1 on my piccy in my album ) where the bird has the enclosed quarters. is this a good place or shall i move it?

3) my equipment/weighing room is completely seperate from the pens so that is not to be included in my mews. the back part of the mews will be built from brick (cos i have tons of them here and need to use them up) as will be the enclosed quarters. What i would like to know is what dimensions should i be looking at for a comfy enclosed quarters? the bird obviously has the entrance hole to the hideaway but is another window necessary? (it is where i put ? 2)

i think that is all my questions for now. As for the roofing i'm going for onduling cos that is the only brand i can find with the transparent sheets i need. the others dont have the same profile.

if you think i have completely forgotten something or anything looks ridiculous please say so. cant have my buzzy not being happy now hehe

seems i cant post the piccies here so i will put them in my gallery!

Bubo, you're too far ahead already :D

What about the drainage, floor, foundations etc.

Start planning from the ground up, the final fittings are the last thing to think about :D

the drainage, floor and foundations are the easy bits and once i have cleared away i will be starting on it. it is the last bits i'm stuck on. what i need to know is the best dimensions for the bird's hide away so i can lay the foundations properly!!
cheers
bubo

by the way can you all understand my drawings??

right, pine trees pulled out and ground cleared i will be starting drainage and digging for the foundations. I do have one quesion, my buzzie's mews will be high at the back where you see the fence coming down towards where i am taking hte piccy. I am actually standing with my back to kadabra's aviary so the buzzard will be able to see kadabra if he takes a bath or if he perches nearer the front of his aviary.

my question is would there be a problem with the buzzard seeing kadabra? would the buzzie try and fly at the front of the aviary if he sees my owl? If so i will change the design of the mews. Bear in mind kadabra very rarely sits right out in front of the aviary as he either hides in his hidey holes in the wall, his box or comes inside (like he does 90% of the time :? ) . There is a 1.50m gap between the front of the buzzies aviary and the side of kadabra's aviary?

thanks for any views and opinions
