My kestrel (tiercel, european Falco tinnunculus) doesn´t want to fly high and circle. He is always sitting on the top of trees and watching me. Any advice?

Hi Bubo,
the theory is that a bird at a tight or low hunting weight will hang around the falconer waiting desperately for food. There is also the birds energy level to take into consideration. A bird low in energy will not have the strength or inclination to climb and pitch.

It is easy to see in display falcons. A bird at a very tight weight will be all over the falconer like a wasp, turning tight and staying low. If the same birds weight is taken up slightly it should range out and climb.

It is a fine ballance between flying at a raised weight and flying at too high a weight!!

great advise, its refreshing to hear something new apart from the usual "drop its weight" answer that most give. :D

Have you had any experience with Kites? Do you know the basics?

Easier than kite training for such a small bird will be to go to a slope with an up draught wind and let it climb on that, provided the weight it correct.

I don't have much experience in these matters, but if i were to try it here's what I would do. I would put her up and if she goes strait to a perch I would walk away from her. She should either fly to the next closest perch to me or or fly up above me waiting for me to put out my fist for her to land on, and at the point where she's in the air above me I would whistle to mark what she's done right then give her a reward like a well garnished lure. Once she's got that figured out and begins to purposefully hover over me for rewards I would offer bigger rewards for going higher and little or no reward for being too low. This is based on my little experience with an American kestrel that would hover over me quite often, I'm sure I could have worked with that if I wanted to. My understanding is that a long time ago before kites and balloons this was one of the ways they did it.
